12.  Wirral Festival of Firsts 2021

Our church is participating in the festival of First this year. On Sat2nd  and  Sun 3rd October.  Some of us will be exhibiting  our own church.More details are to be found at https://wirralfestivaloffirsts.org.uk/
A Wirral Festival of Firsts Event will take place in our Church building between 10 - 4pm on saturday and 12 - 4pm on Sunday. There are 18 other venues (mainly churches) involved with over 50 local artists, craft groups, schools and pop up poetry events taking place. At the event in our church there will be exhibits from some of our own church family, a prayer focal point and we hope to offer refreshments. This is such a great opportunity to open our doors to the community and showcase Jesus through our love and welcome. This is an exciting opportunity which has come our way as the Wirral Festival of Firsts approached us directly and is a great thing to invite your friends to.
We also need help in stewarding the event and providing refreshments - so if you think you can help out for either of these days for an hour or more please can you let Jane Gamble know either when you see me in church or at jane.gamble68@gmail.com.
Please be praying for this event, and spread the word that we are open to all.
 From 1 September a detailed map and programme will be available from local outlets or to download from the festival website

Smartphone Competition

The enthusiasm of the entrants and the quality of entries last year persuaded us to run another Smartphone only competition in 2021.   A local venue will display the top ten images from our Smartphone Photography competition with the theme: Life in 2021

Entry is free and as well as having your work displayed you might win one of our three cash prizes. You can enter up to 23:59 on Sunday 29th August and results will be available from Sunday 12th September. Details below. Instagram. #WFOFPHOTOCOMP21. Good luck!

13. Finally...

Its super bonus time this week folks
and
not one but two hymns for you to enjoy!!

Vanessa and I will be off to the Sussex Coast later this month for a week and my ramblings today are both sea related.
I do love running, although with my little legs I don't go very quickly . But what I like is that I can put a pair of running shoes and shorts in my bag and run on holiday.  Lanzarote early in the morning is one of my favourite runs.  It also gives me a chance to stop and watch the sun coming up over the sea and the neighbouring Island of Fuertoventura. I think and pray while I am sitting there and I wanted to play a beautiful hymn that we used to sing at school called" I listen and I listen". Unfortunately I can't find  a sung version on youtube but  the words are as follows:

In the morning early
I go down to the sea
And I see the mist on the shore;
I listen and I listen

When I go to the rocks
I go looking for shells
And I feel the sand beneath my feet;
I listen and I listen

When the stormy day comes
Waves crash on the cliffs
And the wind whistles through my hair;
I listen and I listen

And at night when I sleep
And the sea is calm
The gentle waves lap the shore;
I listen and I listen

I sometimes think that God
Is talking to me
When I hear the sound of the sea;
I listen and I listen.

Today's first hymn is a firm favourite for many.  It is of course," Will Your Anchor Hold"

Will Your Anchor Hold
Back to  Sussex.  Our Sister in law Liz has a flat at Winchelsea Beach, a beautiful and unspoilt part of the Sussex coast between Hastings and Rye. We have been going to "Winchy" as it is known in our family since our children were small and now the grandchildren enjoy it too. The flat is about 30 yards from the beach and you can see the sea from every window . One of my runs takes me to the old lifeboat station. The Rye Harbour  lifeboat station was  about a mile and a half from Rye Harbour.
On 15 November 1928 the lifeboat Mary Stanford capsized, drowning the entire 17-man crew. The lifeboat was launched in a south-west gale with heavy rain squalls and heavy seas .The crew were rowing to rescue the crew of the Alice, a Latvian ship that had been in collision with  a German ship, the Smyrna.. Unknown to the lifeboat crew the Smyrna managed to rescue the entire crew of the Alice.
Return home flares were sent up but the crew did not see them in the bad weather. The boat capsized with the loss of 17 brave men.
They are buried together in Rye Bay churchyard and the picture above is of the memorial window in the church.  The men are not forgotten and a memorial service is held each year.
Of course there can be only one hymn; Eternal father Strong to Save.
