Director's note

As we are slowly emerging from the pandemic and enjoy face-to-face meetings, lunches and coffee breaks, the worlds power consumption has risen sharply in the first half of 2021, compared with the first half of 2019. The world is even more power hungry after the epidemic, and the consumption growth in TWh is larger than the growth in new solar and wind capacity Combined with reduced nuclear power production, this has contributed to strong growth in emission-intensive coal powered energy causing a rise in global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. So, despite the drop in carbon emissions during the pandemic, we are in the middle of a rapid black restart instead of a green recovery.

Earlier this week I gave a climate update talk for the BKK board (one of the largest power grid owners in Norway) and many of the questions were curiously focused on CO2 emissions and the role of the ocean as a buffer—‘how will climate change affect our coastal waters and fjords’? I was very happy to be able to provide the board with the link to the recent expert interview with Are Olsen in Energi og Klima where he gives an in-depth explanation for why the natural buffers for CO2 become less effective in a warmer world. So far, the sea and photosynthesis on land have slowed warming. But the warmer it gets, the less that effect will help us. This is a fine example of how we BCCR scientists can use our expertise to support policymakers, corporate stakeholders, educators, and the general public in their work, awareness and decision making. My goal is to engage more BCCR scientist to translate their research for the broader public, reaching a greater audience, and increasing our impact. The latter is also why BCCR was actively present during ‘Arendalsuka’ bridging science and policy, convening debates with key decision-makers in public and private sectors to enhance BCCRs national profile and impact.

After witnessing several debates on climate and energy with leading Norwegian politicians during Arendalsuka, I am not overly optimistic when it comes to Norway’s role in curbing our emissions to meet the Paris agreement. But, whether our politicians want to discuss ending oil exploration or not oil & gas will be hot topics in the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow in November, where Denmark and Costa Rica will launch an alliance: The Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA) to speed up the end of oil and gas. We need action now.  The problem is, to quote the famous professor of rhetoric Georg Johannesen «Å handle er et vanskelig språk» (To act is a difficult language).

Enjoy a sunny weekend and good running to the BCCR marathon runners that will participate in the Bergen City Marathon on Saturday!

Bjerknes at the annual democracy festival Arendalsuka
As society slowly is going back to normal, the annual democracy festival Arendalsuka again gathered politicians, business life and organizations.

The BCCR & Climate Futures where present with debates, with Kikki starting the week Monday evening at NRK kicking off the national election (valkamp) on NRK.

Kikki is on air ca 30 minutes into the live broadcast

Vigdis Vandvik had a keynote in the main program, at the main climate discussion with the leaders of all the main political parties

The Portrait

Name: Kristine Steinsland

Position: PhD student

How long have you been at BCCR: Soon two years, from October 2019.

Education: MSc in marine geology and geophysics

Background: I did my masters here at the University of Bergen in the wonderful Realfagsbygget, before moving the few meters to GFI for my PhD. I did an exchange to the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and studies at UNIS in Svalbard.
What is it you do exactly at work: I reconstruct sea ice cover, surface ocean hydrography, and deep ocean currents during the Last Interglacial (~116.000-128.000 years). Most of my time I spend on a microscope counting dinoflagellate cyst (microfossil) assemblages, or I'm in the organic geochemistry lab at AWI working with biomarkers.

Why climate research: Because I wanted to save the world of course, or at least something in that direction... I started with geology quite blindly, not really knowing what I was going into. I quickly realized that I was drawn to studies about oceans and ice and the processes that change the Earth's climate on different timescales from the formation of the Earth until today.

What extracurricular activities do you have? I am a very standard GFI-located PhD student; I climb, run, and hike. Else I am off doing something with my newfound hobbies, sailing and windsurfing (which also includes watching a lot of YouTube videos).

Do you have a favourite song, band or Artist? A hard question! I love a lot of different music. To choose an all-time and forever love I will say Radiohead. I am currently addicted to the French artist Thylacine - who composed and recorded an entire album on the Transsiberian! (!!)

Favorite food: Crab, and cheese (not combined).

The best and worst about Bergen: The best is the fact that you can be in the city centre and on top of a byfjell in 40 min if you want! And that everyone is SO happy on the sunny days, including me!  I am not in love with the cruise ships in the summer and I miss a market culture.
