MESSAGE FROM THE PIRL STEERING COMMITTEE

Dear PIRL Network, 

Welcome to the first PIRL Newsletter! We are very excited to launch this monthly newsletter of events, meetings, resources, and opportunities within and beyond the PIRL Project. We hope with this newsletter to provide ways for you to stay connected and involved with PIRL.  

We have taken the liberty of signing you up for this newsletter because you are part of the PIRL network. If you ever want to unsubscribe, you can easily do so at any time using the link in the footer of this email, or you can send us an email at PIRL@utoronto.ca and we will take care of that. 

More topics will be added to future newsletters. We welcome all feedback, comments, and questions you may have about the information provided in the newsletters.

REQUEST FOR INPUT

This newsletter is designed for all members of the PIRL Network to share and receive information. If you know of events, workshops, resources, and opportunities that could be of interest to members of the Network, feel free to share the information with PIRL@utoronto.ca and it will be added to the next newsletter.
Please send information by September 20, 2021 for it to be featured in our October PIRL Newsletter.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND MEETINGS 

PIRL INSTITUTE REGISTRATION 


We are very excited to open registrations for the 2021 PIRL Institute! This year's Institute will take place on October 28, 29, and 30, 2021. The focus will be on disseminating research findings in disability inclusive research.

The program will be out by early October and will be sent to those who have registered. Participation is also open to people who are not yet members of the PIRL Network, so you can share the registration link with others who might be interested in attending. 

There is no cost to attend, and registration is required. Please allow 10 to 15 minutes to read and complete the registration form. 


This year, we will be using a point system and participants will qualify for a certificate of participation after obtaining at least 20 points. By completing the registration form by September 15th, 2021, you will obtain 4 points.

OPPORTUNITIES 

NEW PIRL PODCAST SERIES: LOOKING FOR HOSTS AND REVIEWERS


What is this Opportunity About: As we head into our third year of the PIRL project, we will be introducing new and exciting ways of sharing our experiences, research findings, what we do, and how we learn together in the PIRL network. We are excited to announce that we will be launching a new podcast series called “Inclusive Research with PIRL.
These podcasts will be centered around Disability Inclusive Development research, exploring various topics such as Navigating North-South Partnerships in DID research, defining our identity as researchers, Intersectionality and Inclusion in research, and many more topics. 
The format of these podcasts will include panel discussions, one-on-one conversations, and storytelling. We will be sharing episodes on several platforms such as Spotify, Apple podcast, Google podcast, WhatsApp, and google drive links for easy download.
We are currently looking for volunteer hosts to facilitate the podcast conversations AND are also looking for people who will be in charge of reviewing each episode for quality control before they are officially shared.

Who can Participate: This opportunity is open to all members of the PIRL network. 
Why Participate:  Becoming a host can help hone your communication and facilitation skills. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about DID research while connecting with and building new relationships with people in the field. As a reviewer, you will get an early look at the exciting podcast content while developing your attention to detail and ability to ensure that guidelines are followed adequately. 
How to Participate: Please send an email to PIRL@utoronto.ca and indicate whether you are interested in becoming either a host or reviewer. In your message, please let us know what interests you about this opportunity, and what you would bring to the podcasts.
Deadline: September 15th, 2021

We are still learning about the process of planning this podcast series. If you have any suggestions of topics, best practices, or questions about the podcast, please get in touch with PIRL@utoronto.ca

HOW TO STAY INVOLVED WITH PIRL 

Looking for ways to stay involved with PIRL? These are some things you can do: 

  1. Let us know that you want to be on the mailing list if you aren't already receiving emails.
  2. Attend PIRL webinars. Offer to present at one!
  3. Become a PIRL podcast host or reviewer.
  4. Share resources and opportunities that would be of interest to PIRL members.
  5. Lastly, feel free to share any ideas or suggestions you may have on ways you can contribute to the PIRL Network and the PIRL Project.
