Everything Kāpiti

Ngā Pitopito kōrero mai i te Kaunihera o Kāpiti

Kia ora Kāpiti

New Zealand has moved into COVID-19 Alert Level 4. We’ve been here before Kāpiti, and we all know what to do – stay home, stay in your bubble, and stay safe.

We hope you’re doing okay after the announcement. We have some tips and links for you today to refresh your memory for keeping safe at changed alert levels, so please check them out!

Stay connected and check in with your whānau and neighbours in a safe way to see if they need any support. Contact Healthline if you have any concerns about your health, or that of others. And please stay at home if you feel unwell.

Remember to keep calm, clean and kind, Kāpiti – we’re all in this together.

What we're doing

At Council, our priority is to support the health and wellbeing of our community and Council staff, and the wider national response.

Our call centre is still operating, so if you need urgent assistance you can contact us on 0800 486 486 (if it’s an emergency situation please call 111). For matters that are not of an urgent nature we ask that you consider holding off calling us or email us at Kapiti.coast@kapiticoast.govt.nz.

Our water and wastewater staff are keeping our essential services running, with extra safety precautions in place, so spare a thought for them – they’re doing a fantastic job.
At a glance, services that are closed include:
  • Council service centres
  • playgrounds
  • libraries
  • swimming pools
  • public toilets.

No play for playgrounds

Our playgrounds are closed but they are not taped off due to the short notice we had to move to Alert Level 4 and the need to keep our people safe – the Delta variant is a very different beast and we are not prepared to put our people, who are your friends and neighbours, at risk.

The Prime Minister has made it very clear that the use of playgrounds is strictly prohibited so please do the right thing and follow the Alert Level 4 rules.

We know it’s a tough call for everyone, especially our youngest community members; hopefully everyone can follow these rules, and we can all get back to normal quickly.

In the meantime, the playgrounds are lava!

What you need to do

There are no known cases of COVID-19 in Kāpiti right now, but we all need to act as though there are.

If you have to go out to access essential services:

  • wear a mask
  • scan when you enter a premises
  • stay 2 metres away from others.
Please, sanitise your hands often.

Level 4 changes for dogs

Out and about walking with your dog? For everyone's safety, please keep your dogs on a leash while we're at Alert Level 4, even in usually off-leash areas. Treat your dog as part of your bubble. This will help ensure there’s no contact between bubbles, and reduce the calls we get for dog incidents.

Please remember that our dog parks are also closed for this reason.

With more dogs and their walkers out and about, there are increased opportunities for scuffles between dogs, which may require owners to intervene and break their bubbles. We want to avoid this, and keeping dogs on leashes is a proactive action we can all take to help.

Kerbside rubbish and recycling collection

Kerbside mixed recycling wheelie bins (for plastics, cans, paper, card) will continue to be collected. Waste service providers will process as recycling if appropriate.

If you’re an EnviroWaste or Low Cost Bins customer your glass crate will not be collected.

We encourage you to think about:

  • reducing the amount of packaging you buy wherever possible
  • reusing containers for other purposes around your home or property
  • cleaning your recycling and stockpiling it in boxes/bags until processing resumes when the lockdown is over
If you must dispose of recycling in your rubbish, remember to squash it, and put out only a bit at a time. You need to make sure you don’t overfill your bin, as this will:
  • overwhelm collectors
  • impact on collection times.

Different districts have different recycling systems – this information is for the Kapiti Coast District Council. For further information on collection services please contact your service provider.

Library services at Alert Level 4

Remember that our libraries are now closed, and will not reopen until Alert Level 2. We’ve had to close our returns slots, so please keep your issued items until we let you know you can return them.

We’ll extend all loans for as long as necessary, and no fines will be issued during this time – more book-time for free!

Our elibrary is available, and we’ve now switched to the Libby app. You can download this to your computer or device – sign in using your library card and password.

Please check the Council website and Facebook for the most up-to-date information, and keep safe.

COVID-19 – official information sources

There’s only one source of official information for COVID-19 in New Zealand – that is central Government, via the Ministry of Health and other agencies.

Central Government’s COVID-19 website has everything you need to know about in one place: www.covid19.govt.nz. Learn the simple things you can do to unite against the virus and slow its spread, find out what help is available, and get the latest updates.

The Kāpiti Coast District Council COVID-19 website page is the official source for local COVID-19 information, and we're updating it frequently as information comes to hand. We're also keeping you updated through:

Two metres – bigger than you think

Two metres might be bigger than you think!
We all have to act like we have the virus, so when you’re out on narrow tracks like the Waikanae River track, please give people passing by at least 2 metres of space.

Photo of two women in a park, waving at the camera and measuring out two metres between them.

On bridges, take turns crossing, as they are narrow spaces. Biking on narrow tracks next to walkers is not ideal, so consider changing your route to a road or wider track.

Overall Kāpiti, we know what to do – stay home and stay in our bubbles and wear a mask when we go out locally. Kia kaha. We’re all in this together.

This is what you can control, this is how you will save lives.

Keep in contact iconAntenno is our #1 way to get alerts out to you!

Have you downloaded our Antenno app? It's a free mobile app that sends you Council-related notifications about the places you care about – especially important at a time like this.

We'll be using it more while we're at higher alert levels to let you know what you need to know, quickly. We look forward to welcoming you to the whānau.
