AIDE Updates

August 18th, 2021

Welcome Back Message

Hi Everyone!

Hard to believe we are already at the end of August and getting ready to start another fall semester. It feels like time moves faster and faster each year. I hope that everyone was able to take some time to relax and rejuvenate a little. As you start to prepare for fall semester, I want to take this chance to share with you what we’ve been doing in Academic Innovation & Distance Education (AIDE) and things to look forward to this semester.

We’ve been very busy working with faculty to develop new full online classes with the plan of increasing our fully online degrees. If you are interested in developing an online course, or getting certified to teach online at BHCC, you should contact your academic dean.

As you may already know, BHCC uses Moodle as their learning management system (LMS). This is a great tool where you can share course material with your students, create assignments, and have asynchronous discussion.  Every class at BHCC has a Moodle course shell assigned. Even if you decide not to use Moodle for your course, we encourage everyone to at least post their syllabus and instructions on how to get to your remote class. I feel so strongly about this that I will offer you the opportunity to send your syllabus and first day instructions to aide@bhcc.edu, and we will post it for you.  Students will automatically see their Moodle shells on the first day of the semester, and are disappointed when they can’t find the basic course information.  If there is anything we can do to help you with setting up your Moodle shell, you can email us at aide@bhcc.edu or set up a one on one appointment with one of our team.

The other major project our team has been working on is transitioning to a new video recording platform, Panopto. We have been working closely with the vendor to get all of your videos from TechSmith over to the new platform.  You will need to re-link all of your old videos in your Fall 2021 course.  Videos that are linked to TechSmith will no longer be available for viewing after Sept 30, 2021. You can view our Panopto Tutorials for more tips and tricks.

I wish you all a wonderful semester and look forward to working with you.

Thanks,

-Grace

Course Accesses and Visibility

Moodle courses are created for all BHCC courses.

Access to Course:

  • Most Fall Moodle Course Shells have been made available to edit. Faculty can locate their Fall courses by navigating to their Moodle Dashboard and changing their view to show “Future” courses. View our Moodle Dashboard Resources to learn more.

  • Students can access their course on the first official day of class. The “First Day” is determined by the course start date listed in the Student Information System, Colleague.

Check Start Date of Course:

  • Faculty can check the start date in the Self-Service “Course Description.”

Visibility of Course:

  • Faculty can make their Moodle courses visible to students before the first day. Learn how to “Show your course site” early.

Preparing Students for the First day of Class:

There are many ways you may choose to teach in this "remote" world that we find ourselves in. A key thing to consider is how we notify our students "what to do or where to go on the first day of class." While emailing students can be effective, we also welcome you to post "first day of class" information on Moodle. Here is our resource on how to post first day of class information. Our team would also be happy to do this on your behalf. Simply email your "first day of class" information along with your syllabus to aide@bhcc.edu and we'll post it in your Moodle course.

Extend Moodle Access past it’s official end date

If you need a course site to remain available - because you have students completing an IP or for any other reason, you can send the AIDE team an email and request extended access for your student(s). Learn how to Request an IP For Students.

Import Moodle Content From Previous Semesters

Please check out our resources on How to Import Moodle Course Content.

Visit the Moodle Course Management page of the AIDE Resources ePortfolio for information about merging courses, adding ACE mentors, and much more! Contact us at aide@bhcc.edu if you have any questions.

Digication ePortfolio & OER

The AIDE Team will host webinars that review how faculty and staff can use ePortfolios as Open Educational Resources. Join Matt Gomes and Ceit De Vitto to learn how ePortfolios and OER can work together to make teaching and learning more engaging and accessible.

Webinars offered by AIDE partners

Many of our vendors offer introductory and advanced webinars about their products.  Explore the links below to learn more about each product.  These are unpaid professional development opportunities.

WebEx

Getting Started with WebEx

WebEx is a synchronous meeting tool, like Zoom, that allows faculty to host virtual classes, meetings, and informational sessions. You can share your screen to present files, videos, or other media. You can record, save, and share the meeting with others. Every BHCC faculty, staff, and student has their own WebEx account where they can create Scheduled Meetings or use their Personal Room to host meetings. Learn more or get started by visiting our WebEx for Faculty & Staff page in our AIDE Resources ePortfolio. You are also welcome to either drop into the AIDE Virtual innovation lab or schedule an appointment with our team to learn how to schedule your meetings.

Did you know you can integrate your WebEx Meetings into your Moodle courses?

The WebEx Education Connector allows BHCC Faculty & Staff to seamlessly integrate Webex virtual meetings, office hours and Teams messaging into their Moodle courses. It is an efficient and convenient way to use various WebEx tools without having to add student emails to an invitation list, or requiring them to actively "go" to different sites. Learn more about the integration.

Did you know you can access most BHCC apps from the Onelogin Portal?

That's right, you can access your Moodle (Referred to as Moonami), Digication ePortfolio, Panopto, and WebEx accounts all from one place. The BHCC Onelogin Portal is a great link to bookmark in your browser. Access the portal now: bhcc.onelogin.com.
