On August 9, 2021, many of you attended the virtual meeting by the FAA regarding the VNY Proposed Redesign. To summarize, the VNY Redesign is still in its conceptual stages, and the FAA was vague and evasive as to how the procedure would actually be flown. Studio City For Quiet Skies’ interpretation of the procedure is accurate and the southeast San Fernando Valley, includingStudio City and east Sherman Oaks, is in the crosshairs if the procedure moves forward as is. We can only support the VNY Proposed Redesign if safeguards are in place to protect the southeast San Fernando Valley that already bears the brunt of all BUR aircraft. This decision must not be rushed through!
Although a good start on providing reliefto some hillside communities to the west, including western Sherman Oaks, parts of Encino, Bel Air, and Beverly Crest, this relief comes at the expense of the Studio City foothills, east Sherman Oaks, the Hollywood Hills, and protected parklands, already severely impacted by BUR.
The success of the Proposed Redesign is entirely dependent upon Air Traffic Controllers’ (ATC/TRACON) ability to “vector” or turn the aircraft to the north. FAA refused to answer our questions regarding ATC’s ability to vector turns in a timely fashion. We know from experience with BUR that ATC/TRACON cannot be relied upon to do this, even during COVID when there was no other air traffic.
The above graphic depicts WP3 and the 110-heading (added in red) per GPS coordinates. As you can see, if ATC/TRACON does not turn the aircraft immediately, at a speed of 253 mph, aircraft will hit Ventura Blvd at Woodman within 15 seconds, and within 30 seconds, the already severely BUR impacted Studio City foothills and parklands will be further decimated by a concentrated VNY path. The 110-heading is pointed directly at the Studio City foothills and mountains.
