As we learn from quantum physics, looking at the world can change how it behaves. Whether we do it alone or in a group, watching, seeing and viewing are all powerful acts. The pandemic threw the possibilities of collective spectatorship into disarray. And facemasks made us all less visible, and yet increasingly reliant on eye contact for communication.
