The Scholarship Board of Directors

On behalf of Business and Professional Women of Nevada County, Judith McCarrick was pleased to present a $1000 donation of twenty $50 gift cards to Katie Kohler, Principal of Chicago Park School. Principal Kohler assured us that the cards will be distributed to those families who lost their homes and possessions in the catastrophic River Fire which destroyed more than 142 structure. Families receiving the gift cards will be able to use them for groceries and supplies at Safeway and Grocery Outlet. BPWNC is glad to help our local families in this difficult time.

BPW will have a table  the Sierra College Back to School Fair on August 24th. A great opportunity to get reach out to our community about our organization.

We will let you know how it went in our September newsletter.....

BPW’S LEGISLATIVE PLATFORM FOR 2021: PAID LEAVE

This week, the California legislature will return to Sacramento after its summer recess.  BPWNC’s legislative priorities awaiting further legislative action include family and medical leave.  California’s budget legislation addressed it, but not fully.  This is where we stand.

We were successful in preventing a DECREASE in the wage replacement rate for paid family leave (PFL) and disability leave (SDI) which would have been cut from 60-70% of wages while on leave to 55% in January, 2022.  However, the compromise was to extend the current replacement rates for only one year.  We are continuing to collaborate with the California Work & Family Coalition (WFC)  to address this vexing problem in the long term, with the aim of eventually INCREASING wage replacement rates to a level that would make taking leave affordable. One vehicle for doing that is a bill that would raise the rate for low wage Californians to 90% of their regular weekly wages when they qualify for PFL or SDI (AB 123).  To be frank, its prospects are dim.

However, we are hopeful that relief may come from federal action.  The Biden administration has made paid family leave one of the priority goals of a large infrastructure package that would expand the nation’s social safety net.  (This follows on the heels of a smaller bipartisan infrastructure bill addressing traditional items such as roads and bridges.)  You will be receiving news about this in the coming months, including mainstream media coverage of the arcane budget reconciliation process that is necessary to enable passage in the Senate.  As a member of WFC, we are involved in the ongoing conversation and advocacy on a national paid leave program.

Another issue that has come up is the need to extend COVID-related supplemental paid sick leave.  We were successful in the effort to have California adopt the program (SB 95), but the temporary expansion of relief expires on September 30 of this year.  Unfortunately COVID has surged recently, and it is now apparent that the need for pandemic-related sick leave – for example, to care for oneself or a stricken family member, when quarantining because of exposure, or taking time off from work to get vaccinated or recover from any side effects – will not end so soon.  Therefore, we joined WFC in a letter to the Governor and the legislature urging them to extend this special form of sick leave, granting two weeks of emergency paid sick leave for COVID-19 to workers with employers with 26 or more employees.

Let me bring your attention to WFC’s website, which has useful guides about leave rights, at www.workfamilyca.org. You are also invited to join in a series of WFC webinars in September that will provide you with more comprehensive information about various leave programs in our state. This webinar series will take place on September 14th, 21st, and 28th from 12 pm - 1 pm PST. Can’t make it live? Register anyway so you can get access to the recordings. Click here to register.

Thank you all for your commitment to BPWNC and our advocacy aimed at improving the lives and livelihoods of working women and their families. Together, we are stronger and our voices louder.
