Look Up!
Pastor Mark Wagner
It has been a heavy week.

Around the world, the democratic government of Afghanistan is collapsing under Taliban advances. Kabul has fallen. Terror reigns.  Freedom seems defeated.  In Haiti a tropical storm is following on the tail of a catastrophic earthquake that shook the country three days ago. Thousands are in peril. Closer to home, the Delta variant of Covid is spreading quickly as children get ready to return to school.  (Really?  Are we still facing this danger?)

I realize that some of you may be questioning my encouragement skills!  But in the face of such great tragedies, those who believe in Jesus Christ must look up.  What better place to turn?  Do we believe that the Lord God Omnipotent reigns?  Do we believe that He is Sovereign over all people and events on this planet?  Then, in times of trouble and turmoil, we should lift our eyes to Him!

Looking back to the Egyptian crisis when Pharaoh advanced against Israel in those terror-filled moments, we read, “But I [the Lord] have raised you [Pharaoh] up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” (Ex. 9:16) It seemed hopeless.  Disaster seemed inevitable.  All was lost…or was it?  It was a dark moment, but a great light broke through.

Remember, God can take the wrath of man and turn it to praise Him. (Ps. 76:10, NASB).  He can use moments of discipline and flip them into encouragement.  [Do you remember Sunday’s sermon?]  He has not lost control!

So, what should we do? Say, “Hakuna Matata” and forget the problems? No! Just the opposite. Stop right now and pray to the Lord who has power to work in the darkest night.  Ask Him to turn the hearts of the Afghan people to the Good News.  Pray for our missionaries who are serving heroically in Haiti.  And look for the abundant opportunities around us to express hope to those gripped with Covid fear.

Look up and acknowledge the Lord! The Lord is far greater than the adversity that threatens to overwhelm us.  Let me leave you with a couple of very familiar verses in this moment: “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”  (Prov. 3:5-6)
