50 Years of Academic Freedom
NIAS is delighted to invite you for the Opening of the Academic Year 2021/22. During this special anniversary edition, we celebrate that for fifty years, scholars, journalists and artists have entered our doors to pursue their curiosity-driven research. Join us, in person or online, as we mark this moment together with all who have been part of our intellectual haven, or will become so.

Programme
14.30 - 15.00 Tea and birthday cake

15:00 - 16:30 Programme including

  •  “50 Years of Academic Freedom”, opening words by Jan Willem Duyvendak, NIAS Director
  • Robbert Dijkgraaf, Director and Leon Levy Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA, on academic freedom
  • “Who’s Afraid of Academic Freedom?” by Nadia Al-Bagdadi, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Central European University in Hungary, and former President (2018-2021) of the Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study.
  • Spoken word by Hagar Peeters, writer, poet and alumna 2019/20

and presentations by fellows Rahul Rao, Stella Nyanzi, Lukas Verburgt, Sarah de Lange and Ghazwan Yaghi; and Ineke Sluiter and Wilma de Koning, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

To attend the Opening of the Academic Year in person at the Eye Filmmuseum, please register before 3 September 15.00 CEST.
Please note that you will need a valid Covid Certificate to enter, so we can (re)connect in person and raise a glass together in a safe way.

This event will also be live-streamed from 15.00 - 16.30 on NIAS' YouTube Channel.  Please register before 6 September if you would like to receive the link in your inbox one day in advance.
