THE MIDTOWN CONNECTION
August 27, 2021

Welcome to the Midtown Community Church newsletter! Here you will find information to connect with the people and ministries at Midtown as we seek to be renewed by Jesus Christ for the purpose of drawing people into community, growing as an authentic worshipping community, and sending them out to renew and create communities locally and globally.

Youth Director Position
We are looking to hire a new youth director to work with our growing youth ministry (grades 6th-12th) at Midtown Community Church.  This is a great opportunity for someone who loves teenagers and/or feels a potential call to long-term ministry down the road.  This is a part-time, paid position.  If you, or someone you know, is interested in this position, please send all inquiries to Pastor Lindsey at lindsey@midtown-church.org.
10:30AM Worship Continues This Fall!!

After discussion with Ridge Road Baptist Church about their continuing concerns with Covid-19, they are requesting that we continue with our current worship time through the end of October. Therefore, Midtown Church will stay with a 10:30am worship time until November 7th after which the plan will be to return to a 9:15am worship service.  Thank you for your patience as we navigate this season.
Community Groups are Back!

Midtown's Community Groups will return the week of Sunday, September 12th.  Our Community Groups are small groups (anywhere from 6-15 people) that meet regularly (weekly or every other week) in homes throughout Raleigh for Bible study or sermon discussion and prayer.  If you want to get to know other people, grow in your faith, find encouragement and support, or simply learn more about Jesus, visiting a Community Group is a great way to start!  We will publish our finalized list of Community Groups soon.  In the meantime, email Pastor Daune (duane@midtown-church.org) for more information or to get connected with a Community Group Leader in your area.

Read Gentle & Lowly This Fall!

Crossway Publishers has given Midtown Community Church 150 free copies of the book Gentle & Lowly by Dane Ortland.  The Gospel Coalition named it one of the best books of 2020, and the staff of Midtown has been reading through it this year.  Feel free to pick up a free copy in the foyer (by the front doors to the sanctuary).  Our encouragement is that you consider reading and discussing this book with one or two other people at Midtown Church this fall.  If you would like group suggestions, please reach out to Pastor Lindsey at lindsey@midtown-church.org.

Responding to the
Afghanistan Crisis

We are all aware of the events transpiring in Afghanistan at the moment.  If your heart is breaking over this situation and you want to help, we encourage you to reach out to Refugee Hope Partners as they have opportunities to minister to some of the Afghan refugees directly impacted by these recent events.  There are opportunities to give financially or assist with temporary housing for Afghans who are currently relocating to the Triangle area, as well as a variety of prayer suggestions (see list below).  For more information, check out The Love Your Neighbor Project.

Prayer Points for Afghanistan From RHP Executive Director Michele Suffridge:
  • Pray for families trapped in Afghanistan with no way of escape
  • Pray for local friends from Afghanistan who are deeply concerned for their families back home - many are deeply mourning
  • Pray God would mobilize the local church in powerful ways to welcome and serve new families arriving in our city
  • Pray for Christians and gospel workers in Afghanistan who are in grave danger
  • Pray for women and girls who are especially vulnerable under Taliban rule
  • Pray we would display the hope of the gospel in word and deed

Leadership Updates
Deacon Nominations Open 9/1
Throughout the month of September, we will accept nominations for the office of deacon at Midtown Community Church.  As a quick refresher, Deacons are the chief servants of the church who are responsible for oversight of finances, mercy, and church building primarily through the ministry of deed and prayer (Acts 6:1-7 & 1 Timothy 3:8-13).  We will provide more details on the nomination process as we get closer to September 1st, but for now encourage you to begin praying about whom you might consider nominating for deacon.  For more details on the officers of the church and the nomination process, please see the document linked here: Core Leadership Positions for MCC.

Sabbatical for Deacon Seth Peterson
The Session (elders) of Midtown Community Church have granted Seth Peterson a one-year sabbatical from his role as a deacon at the church beginning August 1st.  For those who are newer to the church, Seth is our longest standing officer at Midtown, having served as a deacon since 2015.  His sabbatical is well-deserved and much needed.  Broadly speaking, we hope this continues to set a precedent of caring for the overall health of our church leaders.  The Petersons aren't going anywhere, but let's make sure to pray for them during this season of rest from his official duties as deacon.
