Assalamu alaykum,

We have 7 updates to share with you in today's newsletter:

(1) AMA Public Health Neighbourhood COVID-19 Vaccination Hub:  AMA is facilitating a COVID-19 vaccination clinic every Monday - Thursday for Ottawa residents.

(2) Self-defence and Fitness Workshop for Youth: join us to learn essential self-defence and fitness skills.

(3) Online Field Trip: travel with us around the world to learn about oceans!

(4) Social Gathering for Converts: AMA welcomes our beloved converts to an afternoon of building community ties and connecting with the masjid.

(5) Calligraphy Workshop: learn the art of beautiful handwriting with AMA.

(6) Back 2 School Drive: Sadaqa Food Bank (SFB) has launched its Back 2 School Drive to help acquire school materials for children of needy families for the new school year.

(7) COVID-19 Emergency Isolation Support Fund for Newcomers: the deadline to submit your application has been extended to September 30, 2021.

#1. AMA Public Health Neighbourhood COVID-19 Vaccination Hub

AMA will be facilitating a COVID-19 vaccination clinic every Monday - Thursday for Ottawa residents.

This program is another initiative intended to help reduce barriers for residents who have not yet received the vaccine. The hubs will work with community leaders to promote a comfortable, convenient, and easily accessible option for vaccination, as another step towards the goal of ensuring that anyone 12+ in Ottawa who wants a COVID-19 vaccine can get vaccinated.

You're eligible to receive the vaccine if you satisfy the following criteria:

  • First doses are available for Ottawa residents aged 12 years of age or older at the time of vaccination
  • Second doses are available for Ottawa residents aged 12 years of age or older who received their first dose of an mRNA vaccine at least 28 days before their appointment. Residents who received their first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine can receive an mRNA vaccine after 56 days

Here are the details for the pop-up vaccination clinic:

Date & Time: Every Monday - Thursday from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM

Appointment Type: No appointment is required to receive a vaccine or to speak with a Public Health nurse about COVID-19 vaccines 

If there is a waiting period, residents may receive an appointment card with a time to return to the clinic for their vaccine.

Vaccination offered: Pfizer-BioNtech and/or Moderna 

Location: AMA Community Centre (1216 Hunt Club Rd, Ottawa, ON K1V 2P1)

Items Required: One piece of government identification. This includes:
  • Health Card
  • Driver's License
  • or Passport

#2. Self-Defence and Fitness Workshop for Youth

Join AMA to learn essential self-defence and fitness skills! Learning self-defence builds confidence, improves your physical conditioning and helps develop self-discipline and street awareness.

Here are the details:

Date: Wednesday, August 25

Time: 8:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Age: 13 - 18 years old

Gender: Both Genders Welcome

Instructor: Dianne Thompson

Location: Zoom 

Cost: Free!

Registration Deadline: 6:00 PM on Wednesday, August 25

Each registrant will be sent an email prior to the program containing the Zoom link.

#3. Online Field Trip

Travel with us to learn about oceans!

The participants will also be invited to participate in a fun Kahoot Trivia game based on what they have learned during our field trip. Top scores will be e-transferred prizes.

Ages: 5 - 13

#4. Social Gathering for Converts

Are you a revert to Islam interested in interacting with those like yourself? This is a wonderful opportunity to expand your social circle and connect with the masjid, in an otherwise isolating situation.

Here are the details:

Date: Saturday, August 28

Time: 4:00 PM - Asr Prayer

Gender: Both Genders Welcome

Cost: Free

Location: AMA Garden (Behind the Mosque of Mercy)

Registration Deadline: Please register by 11:59 PM on Friday, August 27, to help our team organize ample refreshments for the event

Are you interested in learning the art of beautiful handwriting? AMA is pleased to offer a Calligraphy Workshop.

Knowledge of calligraphy enables you to write in a decorative style and engage in a relaxing pastime.

Time: 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Ages: 9 - 18

Genders: Both Genders Welcome

Cost: Free

Location: Zoom

#6. Back 2 School Drive with Sadaqa Food Bank

Sadaqa Food Bank (SFB) has launched its annual Back 2 School Drive. With the help of Allah (SWT), through this drive SFB hopes to aid children of 400 needy families to get the supplies they need for the new school year.

Here are the details:

Deadline: Friday, August 27

How It Works:

  • Purchase items listed in the flyer for school children in Kindergarten to Grade 8
  • Drop-off supplied at Sadaqa Food Bank or one of its partner locations

#7. COVID-19 Emergency Isolation Support Fund for Newcomers

Ottawa Newcomer Health Centre (ONHC) in partnership with the Ottawa Health Team (OHT) has received additional one-time funding of $30,000 to support the provision of emergency financial assistance to individuals who are without Canadian status and who do not qualify for other social assistance programs under the province or federal income assistance support during COVID-19

The intended funds are to be allocated to individuals for whom financial hardship poses a direct barrier to COVID-19 testing and/or completing a required period of isolation. We are seeking assistance from our community partners to identify and help process individuals who meet the criteria. ONHC has previously supported 70 families in extenuating circumstances in the past, and hopes to continue to support more in this new phase.
