Good, better, best, great, super, fantastic, stunning, awesome…Think of the most amazing thing that you could accomplish. Think about the most amazing thing that could happen in your life. Think of the most amazing state of being that you could experience. Now, which of those first eight words would you use to describe those three things?
Would it surprise you that the biblical authors would use the word that we translate simply as “good” to describe the most outstanding realities of life and of living and being in the world? This powerful Hebrew word is TOV. TOV (good) is used seven times in the creation story (see Genesis 1) to describe God’s assessment of this pocket of time and space that he has created for us to connect and covenant with him and each other. Our English word “good” simply does not do justice to the grand reality that the created world is. In our context, “good” is almost equal to “okay.” TOV is so much more than our “good” or “okay.”
This Sunday, August 22nd, we will be continuing our sermon series on the book of Genesis entitled Onward to Eden as we deeply explore the big biblical themes that have their beginning in the beginning. Last week, we explored the Tree of Life as being our True Home. This Sunday, we will be exploring the essential theme of TOV as our pastors invite us to be people that Get Your TOV On. Our 9:00 a.m. worship service will be in the Sanctuary with Pastors Steve and Kurt team preaching as Beth Garza and the Wesley Singers lead us in worship. At 10:00 a.m. we will have Sunday School for all ages. At 11:00 a.m Pastor Steve, Beth, and the Chancel Choir will lead the traditional worship service in the Sanctuary and Pastor Kurt, Paul Taggart, and the modern worship team will lead the modern worship service in the Worship Center. Kids’ Church will be led by Mara Dolan at 11:00 a.m. in Room 221.
