DUKE UROLOGY NAMES INTERIM CHIEF

Gary Faerber MD was named Interim Chief of the Division of Urology in July 2021. As planned, Glenn Preminger, MD stepped down from the Chief position this summer but plans to remain clinically active at Duke. Dr. Faerber came to Duke in 2018 after spending majority of his career at the University of Michigan where he had been Resident Program Director for 13 years 1997 - 2010 and Associate Chair of Education from 2010 - 2016. While at the University of Utah 2016 - 18, he was the Surgeon Lead for the Utah Health System South Jordan Health Center. Upon arrival at Duke in 2018, he was appointed as the Ambulatory Surgical Service Vice-Chair for the Department of Surgery. He served as President of the Society of Chairpersons and Program Directors in Urology and as President of the North Central Section of the AUA.

The focus of the Division this year is to apply to the University to become its own Department within the School of Medicine and then begin a search for the first Chair of the Department of Urology at Duke next year.

DR. FAERBER INTRODUCES FOUR NEW FACULTY MEMBERS STARTING THIS SUMMER

I am very excited to announce that on July 1st Dr. Chad Gridley joined our Raleigh group. Dr. Gridley completed his undergraduate studies and his MD at the University of Illinois. He then completed his urology residency at Ohio State and then completed an endourology fellowship at Vanderbilt with a focus on management of benign prostatic hyperplasia as well as stone disease. After completion of his fellowship, he joined the University of North Carolina Health system and grew a thriving practice out of their Smithfield NC locations. He became on the busiest urologist in the Triangle area performing HoLEP, a procedure previously not offered by our group. He will continue to see general urology patients with conditions such as men with elevated PSA, BPH, stone disease, overactive bladder, and hematuria to name a few. Chad has already started to see patients in Raleigh.

Also joining the Raleigh group is Dr. Tara Morgan. She joined our Raleigh group on August 2nd. Dr. Morgan completed her undergraduated studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She then moved to Philadelphia and received her medical degree from Drexel University School of Medicine. She then completed her residency training at the University of Pittsburgh and just completed a minimally - invasive fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern, under the tutelage of Dr. Jeffrey Cadeddu. Dr. Morgan brings a wealth of knowledge in the robotic surgery to our Raleigh practice for both benign as well as oncologic conditions. I am delighted to have both Chad and Tara join our Raleigh team!

I am also excited to have two additional oncology faculty joining us over the next several months. Let me first re-introduce Dr. Michael Abern, who joined our Durham group on August 2nd. Dr. Abern is no stranger to Duke. He completed his oncology fellowship here. Prior to completing his fellowship he received his MD at Rush University in Chicago. He then completed his urologic residency at Rush University. Once completing his fellowship he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois in Chicago. While there he rose to the rank of Associate Professor and was named the Dr. David Presman Professor of Urology.  He also assumed the role of Director of Urologic Oncology. He has authored over 70 manuscripts, 6 book chapters, and has been an invited speaker regionally, nationally, and internationally. He has been awarded several prestigious grants form the Department of Defense and served as head of the Prevention, Treatment and Epidemiology study section of the DOD. He also has been selected Chair of the AUA Office of Education Content Review Committee, and the Editorial and Awards Committee of North Central Section of the AUA.  He serves as a reviewer for such prestigious urologic journals as Journal of Urology, Urology, European Urology, and European Urologic Oncology. Dr. Abern brings a great wealth of oncologic expertise to our already esteemed oncologic team.

Finally, it is my distinct pleasure to also re-introduce Dr. Ankeet Shah, who will be joining us later this fall. He, as you know, just completed his oncology fellowship here at Duke. Prior to him joining us, he obtained his medical degree from Case Western and then moved west to Los Angeles at the University of Southern California for his urologic training. In addition to his oncologic interests, Dr. Shah is also interested in the impact of disposable equipment and its carbon footprint on the environment. I have a similar interest and look forward to collaborating with him on this important issue. Dr. Shah will be joining us later this fall following his wedding and honeymoon abroad. Along with me, please extend a warm welcome to our newest members of the Division of Urology here at Duke!

BRANT THRASHER MD - FIRST DAVID PAULSON LECTURER SPEAKS AT JULY DUKE TUESDAY
Brant Thrasher MD, a former Duke Urology oncology fellow under former Chief David Paulson, gave the first David F. Paulson Lecture on July 20. Unfortunately, Dr. Thrasher was unable to join us in person due to COVID restrictions, but, nonetheless, the event was a success. Dr. Thrasher gave an insightful talk on finances to the residents. His sage advice was incredibly well-received by the residents. The afternoon presentation was timely and thought-provoking discussion focused on artificial intelligence, robotics, and the future of urology. To round out the day, a panel on Advanced Prostate Cancer was led by another of Dr. Paulson's former fellows and Duke Professor Judd Moul MD
