CFHL, UCCE Santa Clara + Master Gardeners: A Thirst Quenching Approach to Promote Health

CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE Santa Clara County partnered with UCCE Master Gardeners to provide a thirst quenching experience for a local YMCA this summer. Master Gardeners have a program called “Drink What You Grow” in which they grow various plants that can be used in infused water recipes. Licorice Mint plants were grown and distributed to the YMCA-Almaden summer program.

Students engaged in a lesson and the same day were able to take the plants home. The lesson consisted of TWIGS “Water First” and “MyPlate, My Wonderful Plate” combined lessons. Alongside the TWIGS lessons were three videos made by Master Gardeners on how to continue growing, harvesting, and using licorice mint. Making infused water with mint promotes healthy eating and choosing water first. The lessons lasted about 45 minutes and afterwards staff provided refillable water bottles to promote ongoing water consumption. This is one of many successful collaborations between Santa Clara County UCCE Master Gardeners and CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE!
