Find Your People

We know establishing a community at UNC takes effort,
and we are here to help!

Get out of your comfort zone.

  • Lean into your stretch zone by exploring new ways to meet friends, have fun and connect with the Tar Heel community.  Starting this process now at the beginning of the semester can be a gentle transition to finding new groups, exploring events, and shaking off the nerves of making new friends.

Find a group connected to your interests.

  • Get physically active. Looking to join a team or compete in competitive Quidditch?  Campus Rec offers many ways to get involved with Club Sports and Intramural sports and Carolina Adventures.

  • Watch Tar Heel sports. UNC is home to a variety of amazing varsity Fall sports including; soccer, field hockey, volleyball, football, cross country, golf, and more. UNC students get in FREE to all UNC athletic events with the exception of football and men's basketball by showing their UNC OneCard.

  • Play trivia. Week of Welcome offers a handful of themed trivia sessions both online and in-person

  • Join student groups. UNC has a variety of student organizations to get involved with.  Stop by Small Fest in the Pit this week to talk with individual organizations on how to get involved.

  • Connect through HeelLife. Check out the calendar of all programs and events on HeelLife.  Pro tip: Use the theme and category filters to find exactly what you are seeking.

  • Look into community-building groups - Get involved with an identity-based community-building group. Student Wellness, CAPS, and the LGBTQ Center all offer a variety of groups to bolster connectedness on campus.

 Start making friends.

  • Eat meals in a communal outdoor space. This can allow you to engage in friendly chit-chat with peers around you or invite someone new to join you for lunch.

  • Attend an interest meeting or recruiting event. Connecting with new people over a common interest can be a great way to build a foundational friendship.
  • Invite a roommate or classmate to try an already existing campus program. Maybe even grab a bite to eat together after.

  • Put your phone away while at events. Disconnecting from our screens and devices allows us more space to connect with people and the world around us.

Assess your risk level

  • Create healthy boundaries for yourself. Making new friends in college requires courage and can be especially difficult in the midst of the COVID -19 pandemic. Before filling up your social calendar, assess what feels comfortable for you and what precautions you might want to take.

  • Mask up to meet! You may want to consider outdoor interactions with masks while getting to know new Tar Heels. This can help reduce your risk of getting or transmitting COVID-19 before having more conversations on what you feel comfortable with.
  • Meet virtually first. Set up a way to connect via text, phone call, facetime, or zoom. Try attending an online event together to get to know each other.

Reach out if you have questions we can answer - on social @UNCHealthyHeels or email us unchealthyheels@gmail.com

Join us for Small Fest this week M-F 11 am - 1 pm in the pit.

Wellness Coaching

If you have a goal you are working towards or any lifestyle change that you are interested in developing (managing stress, being more active, eating healthier, finding more overall balance in life- just to name a few), coaching can be a catalyst for implementing that change you seek!  You are the expert in your own life and know where you want to go, but maybe you are feeling ‘stuck’ or aren’t sure how to get there… that is where a coach can help!

Wellness coaching is a collaborative partnership between you and a coach to help you assess what is currently working for you, what may not be working as well, and to clearly identify your life’s vision so you can begin taking purposeful action steps towards it!

Wellness coaching is a service offered by Student Wellness at no cost to students!  Fill out the Wellness Coaching Interest Form and you will be connected with a coach of best fit within the week.
