SWEET AUBURN
The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced more than $3 million in grants to 40 sites and organizations through its African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, including the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge in Atlanta.

Part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge is the former headquarters of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where Martin Luther King, Jr. maintained an office. The Lodge was also the location of a Madam C.J. Walker Beauty School and WERD Studio, the first African American-owned and -programmed radio station. The grant will provide funding for a preservation plan to guide the future restoration of the building’s character and condition. Read more about this generous grant here.
BUCKHEAD
The Disco Kroger site in Buckhead is set to be redeveloped and the mural is expected to be preserved. APC Executive Director David Mitchell recently spoke with Atlanta Magazine on Atlanta's history of giving Kroger locations enduring nicknames. Read about it here.

EAST ATLANTA HISTORIC DISTRICT
The East Atlanta neighborhood is now officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Included in this listing is the c. 1911 East Atlanta Bank, now home to Flatiron Bar. Designed with elements of Jacobethan Revival style, the East Atlanta Bank Building is the oldest documented extant building in the district’s commercial center and features a Flemish bond brick veneer.

Congratulations to the East Atlanta Community Association and all who supported this preservation effort!

GRANT PARK AND ORMEWOOD PARK
The Atlanta Preservation Center is sponsoring the landmark designation of the Ormewood Avenue Bridge This proposed designation is scheduled for presentation and review by the Atlanta Urban Design Commission on August 25th.

PEACHTREE HILLS
An amended agreement signals a significant preservation win for Buckhead and the National Book Bindery of Georgia Building.

An updated agreement between the developer, Peachtree Hills Civic Association, and the Atlanta Preservation Center specifies not only preserving but also maintaining the primary section of the book bindery as a stand-alone building. The agreement additionally ensures that the exterior façade will not be changed “in any manner that is inconsistent with the historical character."

Since placing this site on the Atlanta Preservation Center's Endangered Places List in 2009, the APC has continued to advocate for the building's preservation and thoughtful reuse. The APC appreciates Kolter Group, Branch Properties, and PHCA working together with the APC on this effort.
