Hi Everyone,
I hope that you are all staying strong during these turbulent times. I have created this monthly “5 Minutes on a Friday” in order to answer any questions, share what I am doing, watching, and reading. At the moment, I feel compelled to share some tips about how we might look after ourselves during the Pandemic, recognising that there’s always someone worse off than you. I am feeling for those family who have lost loved ones and also those of us that are worried about family and friends overseas, particularly given what is going on at the moment with large COVID numbers in some countries and also the incredibly worrisome issue in Afghanistan.

More close to home, one of my daughters is currently experiencing her second lockdown, having moved from Melbourne to Sydney for a new position. Working for Mental Health Australia she’s in a good position to share what she’s been doing. This has included exercising every day, reading, using Adult colouring-in books, and playing games with housemates (Catan is the current favourite) plus she’s enjoying having more time to cook and eat well. I would add that limiting your screen time is also important, if you are working on a screen during the day, then you are on your phone and move to watching TV at night – its easy to lose sight of accumulated hours. We all need to move more!

Please let me know how you are all going, what is helping you lighten your load during this challenging time on here or via our social media.

Until next month, stay safe
Linda

What I'm Reading

I have been doing a lot of reading, and usually have a few books on the go. I recently read The Dictionary of Lost Words by Australian author Pip Williams. It’s a lovely book about a young girl and her father (& a team of lexicographers) who gather words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. It's beautifully written and is intrinsically kind (which is what we all need right now) and it’s also on the best seller list.

Another book I have been inspired by is Ronni Kahn, who set up OzHarvest. I heard her speak many years ago & always love reading the back story about people who have truly made a difference. The book moves between being a bit of a memoir and also talking about how she started OzHarvest. As someone who also started a charity from absolutely nothing – I loved reading about her journey.

What I'm Watching

As you know having a good laugh can be incredibly therapeutic!  I’m sure we are all watching more on streaming services like Netflix. I would highly recommend Schitts Creek, and while it took me a few episodes to get into it and warm to the characters – it was definitely worth it!

I am currently following @the.holistic.psychologist – she creates amazing content and is incredibly insightful. I enjoy her posts around relationships but also she has talked about the psychological impact of the Pandemic and lockdowns. There are so many of her posts that resonate!
