The Yellow 'COVID' Boxes

In Person Event Public Health Policies

By Tony Becker and Celia Fábos-Becker

Just as we were putting this edition of the AmeriCeltic Newsletter together last Thursday, the State of California Office of Public Health issued updated guidelines for large gatherings, some of which are listed in our publications. Indoor events with 1,000 or more persons and outdoor events with more than 5,000 persons must have everyone--participants and guests vaccinated or have had a negative Covid test within 72 hours of the event and be able to show proof. In some counties smaller indoor events in public places, 50 or more persons in San Jose, for instance, will require people to be vaccinated or have a recent negative Covid test.

Most large Celtic and historic events, such as Gold Rush era or Christmas and other fairs and festivals are in city owned buildings, or city, or county parks or fairgrounds. Some will undoubtedly be more insistent than others on upholding these mandates and will scrutinize vaccine record cards.

We also saw reports in the national news that there have been several seizures of large crates of fake vaccine cards by U.S. customs and some batches are suspected as having already made it into the U.S. and been sold. If you are tempted to get one of these fake vaccine cards --DON'T.

Firstly, it is a federal crime to sell or possess any of these. Secondly, to have the card 'filled out', you are giving away a lot of vital information about yourself and you are also giving your credit card information to criminals. You are setting yourself up for further, unwanted involvement with criminals whose objective is to defraud you--and sell your information to other criminals.. Moreover, most of these fakes have obvious spelling and grammar errors, especially in the Spanish language parts. You don't want to attend a festival or fair and end up in jail for presenting a fake vaccine card. Instead, just 'do the right thing' and get vaccinated (unless you have a valid medical reason not to do so and yes, some people do have valid reasons). Otherwise get a COVID test and get the results just before the event you wish to attend.

As an aid for your personal planning we have begun to include links to the public health related policies for the events we include, and to make these links easy to identify, enclosing them in a yellow box with bold print.

If you have a small pub, or are holding a small event, it may also be helpful to you to let people know, through your ads, if you are checking for vaccinations, as many restaurants and pubs in San Francisco are now doing. It's much the same as checking for lawful ID's for drinking alcohol. It spares your already overworked and possibly stressed out volunteers/workers the extra time and headache of people calling to find out if you have a vaccination policy.

An Goilin

An Góilín Traditional Singers

International Singing Session
Fridays, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM PDT

Online via Zoom

By Tony Becker

Since 1979, Dublin's An Góilín Traditional Singers Club members have gathered each Friday evening at 9:00 PM local time for singing sessions.

But when these indoor gatherings were restricted on March 27th, 2020, An Góilín joined the mass migration of such musical gatherings to the Zoom online meeting platform, and to their surprise, An Góilín members have found a much wider audience joining in!

Máire Ni Chróinin says:
The shift to Zoom has allowed us to connect with an unexpected global audience. It has been a pleasure to hear traditional songs from singers all around the world and to get to know singers from Australia, the USA and from different parts of Europe. It has also allowed us to reconnect with our friends all across the UK who have more opportunity to come to our in-person sessions during 'normal' times, but who were grounded just like everyone else when the pandemic broke out.

While I have loved the current summer break, we are all looking forward to getting back to singing and listening to traditional songs on Friday, September 3rd, and to reconnecting with our international attendees again. I don't know how long we will remain on Zoom, as the public health situation and restrictions in force will dictate that, but even when we return to in-person sessions, it is our intention to use technology to connect every so often with the international section of our community.

Information on An Góilín, including our calendar of events, is at http://www.goilin.com

This year's Frank Harte Festival (24 - 26 September 2021) will be a hybrid festival, with a pre- recorded singing walk (normally a themed singing and walking tour which takes place at locations around Dublin city), a live streamed workshop and concert (subject to restrictions in force at the time) and live Zoom singing sessions. The walk, workshop and concert will all be streamed from the Frank Harte Festival Facebook page and from An Góilín's YouTube channel. All information on Festival guests etc. is available now at www.frankhartefestival.ie, and ticketing information will be available shortly. — Máire.

Danu
Danu, Celtic Goddess of Water

Editorial: Celts and Water

Drought and Wildfires/Water Infrastructure Needs

By Cecilia Fábos-Becker

Here we go again.

As of August 19, 2021 the multiple large fires in California have again burned over 1 million acres. More is being burned minute by minute, day by day and we're still counting the burned acreage. As in 2016, we are also in yet another multi-year drought and nothing has changed in well over five years. There are no new dams, and in more heavily forested northern California no new recycle-water-to-potable water plants and, of course, no water desalination plants. Worse, even in full rain years--now averaging one in three for the past 20 years, the storms are fewer and more intense and more water runs off the land and into rivers that go straight to the bays and ocean, leaving not as much as full rain years once did for all life in California.

Our Celtic ancestors once revered abundant, clean water, apparently more than their modern descendants. It was a death penalty crime to deliberately poison in some way drinking water and sacred springs--the fountain heads of all the precious rivers. It was recognized that wild life needed water as much as humans and their livestock and crops. The Celts, including the Scots, Irish, Welsh and Cornish had several gods and goddesses--mostly goddesses connected with water and made sacrifices to them to thank them for water and to keep it flowing, and to keep rain falling also. Danu was one of those goddesses. She was believed to be the principal goddess of one of the first large groups of settlers of Ireland. In the Irish Christian pantheon of saints, Brigid 'Bridie' is still associated generally with wells and springs.

However in dry California with a still increasing population and which needs to provide more food not just for a still growing California, but a still growing U.S., just revering wells and springs and praying for rain is no longer enough. Our wells and springs are going dry and we are doing a lousy job of conserving and recycling water, especially where it is used most, which includes agriculture. Some countries are doing much better at requiring and helping farmers and ranchers to all install drip irrigation and modern electric pumps with automatic sensors to make the most efficient use of water. Israel is one such country. The technology for water recycling plants whose end product is potable, and exceeds California's standards for cleanliness is well established but few cities and towns use it. In one of the most shocking incidents, the Santa Clara Valley Water District spent almost half a billion dollars on a new sewage treatment-water recycling plant and stopped one stage short of what the state required the plant to have for full potability. The board had reasoned that since four stages already exceeded state standards they didn't need to spend the money to add the last. The state sat on its authority and disagreed. That last stage can be added at any time and yet hasn't been for over five years. As a result, according to a recent eyewitness report from a plant tour, over 800,000 gallons of clean water goes into the south end of the San Francisco Bay every single DAY. This is water that could and should be potable and used for drinking, agriculture--and to fight fires.

Yesterday I learned that one of my first cousins, a son of one of my late Celtic Wallace mother's sisters, was ordered to evacuate his home of over 25 years now in Pollock Pines, where he retired as a result of the Caldor Fire. He's nearly 80 years of age--a little late in life to be completely starting over and experiencing this kind of trauma. The CDF is still hoping to save all or nearly all of this town of 7,000 unlike the villages of Greenville and Grizzly Flat. The fire is less than 15 miles from Placerville, is also hitting the Cosumnes River Canyon area where there are several ranches with llamas, alpacas and more and award winning wineries. Today, we learned that the Amador County Fairgrounds is now fully committed to wildfire evacuees, and so the Celtic Fair that was supposed to happen there this weekend was forced to reschedule.

For some of you familiar with vendors at Celtic fairs, a popular soap maker, Sage's Body Care, has their home and business in this area, and there are a couple of small crafts spinning, knitting and weaving businesses with shops of fine woolens including the soft llama and alpaca woolen goods. There is almost nothing but tinder dry forest between Placerville and South Lake Tahoe. Firefighting helicopters will have to use water from Lake Tahoe, whose water level has dropped, to help fight the Caldor fire.

Yes, we all could do as we've been doing every year for about 20 years now and hold more benefit concerts and collect donations for the annual victims of fire. It's never enough to replace all they've lost and does less for the beautiful forests and the wildlife. We need to do something more. California is a rich state with surplus state tax revenues. In the still proposed and not yet fully passed federal infrastructure bill, there are several hundreds of billions budgeted, including substantial amounts for desalination plants, but much less for water recycling plants that restore water to potability, or east west pipelines for desalinated or recycled water on the west coast. The Saudi's have a new company called ACWA that uses a new desalination system that provides clean potable water at under 50 cents per cubic meter--less than what many Californians are paying now. DuPont just made an award to them honoring this new technology and costs that make desalinated water more affordable to poorer nations. The federal government would like the states to pick up some of those recycling and pipeline building projects and related costs, and match federal dollars on desalination projects, as they should. However, there is not one major new bill in the state legislature and no proposals from any of the major water districts for any of this, and no major actions by city councils or county boards to urge or make the water district boards and state legislators do what is needed.

As good Celtic Americans, descendants of Celts who revered water, and understood that all life depends upon clean water to exist, we all need to start demanding, with phone calls, emails and in person--and votes-- that our city councils and county supervisors, our water district boards and our state legislators DO what is needed to provide more water than just their usual of promising more dams that are never built for rain that is not falling in the first place, and otherwise waiting on the federal government for solutions and more money for them.. We need more efficient water use by all agriculture and industry, and we need desalination plants and water recycling plants that restore water to potability for all uses.

Stepwise

Stepwise @ O'Connor's

Sunday, August 29th, 11:00 AM

O'Connor's Irish Pub, 4130 Paramount Blvd, Lakewood, CA

Stepwise is a new Celtic duo featuring native Angeleno fiddlers, Olivia Breidenthal and Liam Lewis.

Liam has been seen most often in his other bands 'The Ploughboys' and 'Whiskey Sunday,' headlining folk festivals and Scottish highland games all over the country as well as playing gigs throughout the week at several of LA's most frequented Irish bars. This includes a weekly residency at the historic Tam O Shanter (1922) which The Ploughboys has held continuously for nearly 20 years.

After studying classical violin for 17 years, Olivia made the switch to Irish fiddle in 2016 and has since been playing with The Arroyo Seco String Band and Rhythm Method at contra dances all over California.

Seeking a safe and socially distant place to meetup and play tunes, Stepwise was created very organically in the park; purely because it was too much fun to play so many good tunes together and not share it with an audience.

Antler Dance

Abbots Bromliad
Picnic and Dance

Monday, September 6, 11:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Pinewood & Fernwood Picnic Areas, Joaquin Miller Park, 3594 Sanborn Drive, Oakland, CA

Abbots Bromliad
Antler Dance
COVID protocols will be in place at this event.

Bring a picnic and join California Revels for live music and dancing the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance together!

Like so many traditional celebrations, the Horn Dance (or more properly, Antler dance) has a long and ultimately obscure history. The earliest documentary evidence dates from 1686 although it is has been suggested that the custom might date back to August of 1226 at the Barthelmy Fair in Staffordshire, England. Today the Horn Dance takes place annually on Wakes Monday, a date falling in early September. The antlers, large sets from caribou or reindeer, mounted on small carved deer heads are kept in the parish hall of the St. Nicholas Church in Abbots Bromley. There are six sets - three painted white and three painted blue (actually brown, but the earlier coat of blue paint shows through). How these antlers came to this parish is a mystery. In the 1970’s, one of the white sets was damaged, and while being repaired underwent carbon dating which showed it to be over 900 years old. Since there were no Reindeer in England in 1065, the horns are presumed to have come from Scandinavia.

Antlers and other props as seen in our annual Christmas Revels will be provided. You may also bring your own!

Plough

The Plough and Stars Update

Wednesday — Sunday 4 to 12 PM

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, 116 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue, San Francisco, CA

Sean Heaney says:
Music at the Plough is back. We aren hosting an instrumental Irish Traditional session Sunday afternoons at 3:00 PM and a song session lead by Christy O'Connell and Vince Keehan on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM. Drop by for a pint!

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, is known around the world for hosting incredible Irish music and pulling beautiful pints of Guinness since 1975. Since then, it has evolved to host live music every night of the week, except Monday, including all genres of music; Bluegrass, Country, Rock, Zydeco, acoustic Americana, and of course, Irish Traditional.

Over the years The Plough and the Stars in San Francisco has hosted many well-known musicians from Ireland and around the globe, but the COVID pandemic and related public health restrictions put a stop to all that for over a year. The resulting business losses threatened to put The Plough out of business permanently, but a sustained community crowdfunding effort helped keep it going, and now it appears to have emerged intact.

Check The Plough and Stars Website for the latest updates.

Starry Session

Starry Session Online

First Sunday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM

Online via YouTube for The Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA

The pandemic shut down the well loved Starry Plough in Berkeley a year ago, halting the Sunday night Irish session and Monday night Irish dancing that had been hosted there for decades.

A small group of Plough regulars are convening electronically, and have begun a monthly open session online, on the first Sunday of the month, running for two hours and starting at 8:00 PM. It kicked off on Easter Sunday, as that holiday has always been a time for new beginnings--particularly in Ireland.

The online Starry Session is live-streamed on YouTube allowing other people listen, play, sing or dance along. It works like this: individuals among a pre-selected group of musicians will be called upon to lead a dance tune or song in rotation. Everyone else is on mute; they can follow the music at home with their own instruments or voices or whatever. It's not as magical as being able to hear each other, but it can still be surprisingly therapeutic.

You can tune in on THIS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMR8XRkX_HX9NdL7bRKCp-g

Other ringleaders of this effort are Don Clark, Sean Wahl, Michele Delattre and Shay Black, so you might see communications from any of them as this process goes forward.

DukeofEdinburgh
Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant
Across from Apple Park

The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant

Open 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day of the year

10801 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino, CA

Many of you have heard the rumors about the The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant.

When this pandemic is over, 'The Duke'! will be moving to new quarters just across the parking lot from our current location!
For details, Watch the official Video!

The Duke is, and will remain, THE only Authentic, (and we do mean AUTHENTIC!), British Pub in the Bay Area, located across the street from Apple Headquarters on Wolfe Road in Cupertino.

The atmosphere at the 'The Duke', is the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly patrons who come in to socialize, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a meal. If you are looking for a comfortable elegance, pints of beer and authentic food, in an authentic English Pub, there is no a better choice in the Bay Area. The Duke offers a large number of beers on draft and by the bottle. Almost anything English, Scottish or Irish is available. Murphy's Irish Stout brewed in Cork, Ireland and Scotch Eggs is always a good choice.

The servers are excellent and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. The menu is expansive and worth exploring. The dark pubsy feel with old regulars in their respective, but not crowded corners around lunch hour in Cupertino, is a great boon.

You can't find more 'authentic' atmosphere, because the entire building was built in jolly old England, then disassembled, shipped and reassembled on site in Cupertino. With the red velvet seating and wall paper and ornate, dim lighting, you are transported to London as soon as you enter the etched glass door.

More info. on The Duke Facebook Page, website www.theduke.com or call 408-446-3853.
