Back-To-School 2021

Letter From the U.H.

They’re Your Kids

The start of a school year is a great time to revisit those things we know, but are prone to forget.  Allow me to do that now with the principle of  in loco parentis.

The fact that you have chosen to lock arms with ECS in the shaping of your children is exciting and humbling for us.  It’s a great vote of confidence that you’re allowing us to assist you in something for which you are responsible.

I sometimes tell families that this business of selecting a school is a big deal for them, because they’re responsible for everything I say to their children.  Now of course that statement is a bit dramatic, but it’s still true.  Am I responsible for my words? Of course.  Am I responsible for their kids? If they enroll, yes.  Do I bear the same responsibility before God that they do? No, I don’t.  So they need to be very certain that ECS (or whatever school they choose) is saying the same things they are saying, speaking the same spiritual language.

It’s also why church involvement is requisite for ECS families.  We lose power and effectiveness as culture shapers and educators if we cannot operate as an extension of the child’s church and his home.  Scripture provides the direction, principles, and wisdom we depend on for our work, and this must be the case for both the school and the home.

So on the ground, this principle has a lot of implications and application.  The following are some expectations that we have, because you are the parents, and we never want to overstep our boundaries, get out of our lanes, or usurp your authority.  These things may seem obvious, but they bear repeating in a culture where parents are increasingly dependent on the State to care for them and their children.  Consider, for example, the following expectations:

  • We expect that you will feed your children, so we don’t have a school lunch program (though we do have parties and feasts from time to time).

  • We expect that you will supervise your children.  Outside of school hours, if you’re at the school with your kids, we ask you to supervise them as guests of Reclamation Church.  This means - for safety’s sake and for sake of the facility - they cannot be running around the building (even though it’s ideal for hide and seek!).  During the school day, we supervise cheerfully.

  • We expect that you will transport your children to and from school.  We may help coordinate rides for a field trip, but we don’ t have a bussing program...on principle.

  • We expect you to manage your children’s schedule and wellbeing.  If it’s 10:00pm and your child has been diligent or derelict, it’s your call to have him go to bed, or finish his homework...and you’ll have the full support of the school.  He may take a hit on his grade on the assignment, but he’ll better served in the long run, which is what we care about most.

  • We expect that you’ll make good decisions regarding the health and welfare of your children.

This list is a sample, but you get the idea.  We respect your position as parents and wish to serve you well in that capacity.

Reopening Plan for Fall of 2021

All of us were hoping that the events of 2020 would make last fall a one-off, but we were wrong.  All around us schools are requiring masking of their students and vaccination of their teachers along with distancing practices.  Meanwhile, we're trying to move foreword in wisdom, with appropriate courage and caution.  So, at ECS this fall, we will be continuing with our same plan as fall of 2020.  That includes the following:

  • We will not modify our class offering.  This means we will even have Choir.  We will sing as much as we always have, and perhaps more loudly than before.

  • We will not require that any students, teachers, or guests wear face coverings of any kind.  Any parents who wish to have their children wear face coverings will have the school’s cooperation and support.

  • We ask that students with any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 (including fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, runny nose, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea) remain at home.

  • *NEW* We will not require proof of COVID vaccination for any students, teachers, or guests.

While the Delta variant of COVID-19 may be more contagious than previous strains, the success we enjoyed as a school last year (including our excellent attendance) gives us reason to believe this course of action to be most prudent and wise.

If you have questions or concerns about this, please don’t hesitate to contact Jonathan or one of the other board members.

Risus est bellum
- Mr. Sarr

Secondary Choir Retreat

This is a heads-up that we will have a choir retreat for all Secondary students (7th - 12th graders) on Thursday, August 26, from 9am-3pm.  It is the same day as Orientation later that evening.  Here're the details in bullet form:

  • Who: 7th through 12th graders (Opus Dei Choir)
  • What: Choir Retreat
  • When: Thursday, August 26, from 9 AM through 3 PM
  • Where: ECS (Reclamation Church)
  • Why: Get to know you, get voice placed for singing, get equipped to become excellent worshipers of the Lord!

Please bring a pencil and a portable lunch.

Both events (the Retreat and Orientation) will take place at Reclamation Church (ECS' home).  Please let Mrs. Sarr (ssarr@evangelcs.org) know if you have a conflict.   Looking forward to making music with you all! ♥️

Orientation Night

Orientation Night will be August 26, which is the Thursday of Teacher Inservice Week. We will begin at 5:30 with an ice cream social followed by a brief program at 6:15.  Secondary students will have opportunity to collect their Omnibus texts, and all will have opportunity to meet the teachers.

In addition to ice cream and conversation with the teachers, features of Orientation Night include the official school calendar for the year, the class schedule, a handbook for the families, the opportunity to unburden yourself of your shared school supplies (Clorox wipes, Kleenex, etc.), and getting to see some of the other families for the first time in months! See you there.

K-2 families, please remember to bring supplies marked as such on the School Supply lists (such as binders and dividers) to your student's teacher.

School Supply Lists: 2021-2022 School Year

  • The 2021-2022 School Supply lists can be found here for Grammar Supplies and here for Secondary.
  • We do ask that, where requested, you purchase specific brands of items. Nothing can rival a Ticonderoga pencil...but if you want a composition book dotted with dancing llamas, go right ahead. We promise we're not trying to be fussy - if a brand is specified, it's because the quality of the product will be a blessing to you, your student, and your teacher. It's a bit like taking your family of four on a road trip in a Cadillac Escalade or a 1973 Ford Pinto. Both may pragmatically get you to your destination...but the process will vary vastly.
  • Per cleaning supplies, please bring one container of Clorox wipes and one 2-pack of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers per family.

Staffing Updates

This summer we’ve made a couple of changes to our teaching staff.  We welcome Mr. David Liden to the Full Time Team of teachers.  He’ll be teaching 4th grade.

Mr. Liden has a Bachelor’s degree from Liberty University, and has been working at Boeing the last ten years.  In recent years he has been pursuing a Master in Divinity from Western Seminary, and he’ll continue to pursue that while teaching at ECS.  He has six children, all of whom will be at ECS this fall.  He is eager to get to know his students and their parents.

Miss Maggie Higgins is now Mrs. Taylor Rothenberger, and she will once again be co-pilot of fourth grade while also teaching a couple of upper-level classes.  She and Mr. Rothenberger will be expecting their first child shortly after spring break!

Mrs. Pakinas will now be teaching fifth grade this year.  This will be a fun reprise of last year with many of these families and she is looking forward to the opportunity! She will be in the Table building along with Mr. Bowers, who will be teaching sixth grade.

These are all exciting changes, and I’m looking forward to seeing God work through these teachers to bring blessing to you all!

Changes Aboard the Omnibus

As our school continues to grow, and as we determine how to allow for continued growth while leveraging the availability of our teachers, we are going to be making a change to the Omnibus classes.  Here are the details.

All Secondary students will be taking Omnibus IV (Ancient).  This will enable…

  • Common material for mutual discussion and sharpening across the whole of the ECS Secondary.  We’ve seen this on a smaller scale the last three years as we have combined classes once weekly for a common reading of a secondary text from the Omnibus corpus.

  • The addition of a third section of Omnibus.  When the classes are not combined, Mr. Sarr will be in charge of the 7th-8th graders; Mr. Giddings will be in charge of the 9th and 10th graders; and Mr. Weinberg will be in charge of the 11th and 12th graders.  Each of them (along with Mrs. Bowers) will share the teaching load when the classes are combined.

  • The sharing of the teaching load.  Each of the four teachers will be teaching a handful of texts, rather than the entire corpus.  This is especially helpful for Mr. Sarr, who wishes to remain in the classroom though his administrative duties continue to grow right along with the school.

The plan for most days (generally speaking, at present, with allowances for flexibility, etc) is for the classes to be combined during 3rd period and to break out into the smaller groups with the respective teachers for 4th period.

We will continue to have Mondays-Wednesdays be focused on our primary texts, with Thursdays being dedicated to the study of the secondary texts.

We really do think this is a great arrangement, and we are excited to see how it shakes out.

Dressing for the Comfort of Others & Uniform Updates

Whether it is the Choir Retreat or Orientation Night, a field trip, or the Rummage Sale, Raggants have lots of opportunities to wear clothes other than their uniforms.  The principle at work ought to be one of dressing for the comfort of others.

This is worth keeping in mind at all times, but particularly when attending a school function not requiring uniforms.  Gentlemen should strongly consider showering and combing their hair...and maybe even putting on a clean shirt.  Ladies should strongly consider the level of modesty reflected in the normal uniform as the standard. All should consider that one day the Raggant uniform will not be required wearing, and that we are preparing them to make good sartorial decisions now.

*

By now you ought to have received an update about our switching over to Land’s End for the majority of our uniform items. As Mrs. Higgins remarked, old uniform items are allowable going forward for as long as they survive, but going forward, new items will need to be acquired from Land’s End.  Our assessment is that the quality and the value are comparable to Dennis, though Land’s End has a broader offering of items and superior customer service.

The only piece of the uniform which we are not able to secure from Land’s End is the gray sweater vests (for grammar students).  We have purchased a small mountain of them from Dennis, which we’ll have embroidered and available to you in the first quarter.  (Some of the larger sizes are backordered.)  We’ll be shouting it from the rooftops when they’re ready; thanks, in advance, for your patience.

Communication & Calendars

At ECS, we don’t want school to be your life...even if it is important.  We really try hard to keep the calendar light...especially when it comes to evening requirements.  So we're letting you know now of the evenings where your child will be expected to be present (i.e., they will be featured and their participation will be for a grade in music class).  We know that emergencies come up, but we don’t want you all to miss any of these nights because you didn’t know about them.  Please plan to be at the following:

  • Tuesday, December 14: Christmas Concert, 6:30pm

  • Tuesday, January 25: Information Night, 6:30pm

  • Friday, May 13: Fundraising Feast, 5:30pm

  • Tuesday, May 31: Spring Concert, 6:30pm

  • Sunday, June 5: Graduation, 6:00pm

Call times for each of these events may be earlier, and not all students will be featured at all events.  Nevertheless, we wanted to get those on your radar ASAP.  Please mark your calendars accordingly, and we’ll see you there!

Per general communication, calendars, and planning, please note the following:

  • The school's phone number is (360) 502-6950. This phone is operated by Miss Dineke Bour, and you should utilize this number to communicate if your child is sick/missing school, running late, or if you will be late at pick-up. It is also a good number for general information (when is the Assembly? Where can I drop off my child's forgotten lunch?). Note that this number isn't checked on the weekends, but will be first thing on Monday mornings!
  • ECS Google Calendar
  • Twitter
  • ECS Parents' Facebook page (this is a closed group for parents and grandparents and requires Admin approval).

First Day of School & Convocation

Our first day of school is Tuesday, September 7th! We will begin promptly at 9am with Matins in the Sanctuary (this is a standard uniform day). It would be wise to arrive around 8:45am to find your child's classroom, drop supplies/backpacks, and be ready to go!

We will have regular schedule until 12:40pm, when our Convocation Assembly will begin with Mr. Sean Higgins as the speaker.

Directly following the Assembly, all families are invited to a BBQ!  ECS will provide hotdogs, burgers, fixings, and chips. We ask each family to please bring a side.

As lunch will be later than usual, we recommend packing an extra helping of snacks to sustain your Raggant!

Campus Parking & Driving

Please do not ever drive faster than 20 miles per hour on the streets adjacent to the school.  There are children who live on these streets and we wish to be a delight to the neighbors, not a nuisance.

When picking up your children or for any other function, please come all the way into the parking lot and take a parking space.  Our neighbors do not like it when we park in front of their houses for student pickup.  Besides, it’s safer for students to walk to your car in the church parking lot.  Additionally, it’s a big parking lot, so parking on the streets is not necessary, even if it’s convenient.

Tuition Payments

The school does not currently have online or electronic means of receiving tuition payments. Instead, please use the following:
  • Drop cash or check payments by the 5th of each month in the locked tuition box immediately to the right of the door inside Mr. Sarr's office.
  • Send payments by the 5th of each month to the school's P.O. Box:
Evangel Classical School
C/O Jim Martin
PO Box 3097

Declaration of Intent to Homeschool

It’s true that ECS doesn’t check all the boxes of a homeschool co-op or a day school.  We have functioned as a homeschool co-op from the start, however, and more than ever before we encourage families to declare their intent to homeschool, filing it with their local public school district offices.  We are not a state-approved school, and as those who bear responsibility for the rearing of our children, we also wish to exercise as much discretion and enjoy as much freedom as possible when doing this.

Book Covers

Many of your students will receive new textbooks this year, and we have asked them to cover those textbooks to keep them nice for as long as possible!

We ask you to cover the textbooks in one of two ways:
  • Either purchase re-usable covers like these from Amazon, which your student can keep and use on future texts.
  • Or cover them following a template like this which still provides coverage but does not require tape or other sticky materials (like Contact paper) to touch the book itself.
