📚 Read: The Night Always Comes by Willy Vlautin.
Why: It’s a timely story about gentrification in Portland written by a local author. The novel follows 30-year-old Lynette as she juggles bad credit, and multiple careers, as she struggles to pay off the home she lives in with her mother and brother. From the description: “While she has enough for the down payment, she needs her mother to cover the rest of the asking price. But a week before they’re set to sign the loan papers, her mother gets cold feet and reneges on her promise, pushing Lynette to her limits to find the money they need.” You can get the novel here.
🎤 Watch: Comedy Party PDX at the Honey Latte Cafe.
Why: Tickets are a cool $12 and you’ll get to see standup legends like Adam Pasi, Bruce Gray, Kelly Ryan, and Tory Ward perform some killer sets, plus, a little birdie told me that you can snag an AMAZING vegetarian breakfast burrito there all day, every day. Plus, there’s never a bad time for some good belly laughs. Tickets can be purchased here.
🎶 Listen: Lost Ox at The Goodfoot Pub & Lounge.
Why: This local band is a mix of “outlaw funk” and classic Americana. Tickets are between $12 and $15, there’s going to be good food and cheap drinks, and staff are requiring proof of vaccination in order to attend. Lost Ox has been around since 2017 and has been bringing the beats ever since. You can find tickets here.
👻 Go: Take a tour of Portland’s old red light district in the Hawthorne neighborhood and hear some creepy ghost stories.
Why: Portland has a LOT of weird, eerie history soaked into its streets and going for a stroll through them can be like stepping back in time. Tickets are a little costly at $40, but the tour is definitely worth it. The guides are COVID-conscious and attendees must wear their masks while on the tour. Plus, these tours are offered all month long so if this weekend doesn’t pan out then you’ve got time to spare. Prepare to get scared and get your tickets here.
😋 Eat: Brunch at the EastBurn Public House.
Why: Do we even need to say it? Portland and brunch go together like bacon and eggs — and EastBurn is bringing the biscuits. Their menu has a gorgeous lineup of brunchable items from their crab cake eggs benedict with jalapeno and roasted red pepper to their Herbs de Provence tofu scramble (for our plant-based buddies). Also, their cocktail menu includes $5 mimosas and a watermelon rhubarb refresher. EastBurn is still operating under some of their pandemic restrictions so be sure to bring your mask along. Sound tasty? Here’s where you can find their hours and menus.
