🏙️ 5 fun things to do in Portland this weekend

Plus, our trivia answer revealed!

By Cassie Ruud

It’s FRIDAY.

If you’re not caught up on the news of the week like how Portlanders responded to the state’s mask mandates, our Weird Wednesday interview with local storyteller Megan Gazzo, and the food news of the week with “Did You Eat Yet” — then check out those links.

I dunno about you all, but once Friday rolls around I often find myself mentally exhausted and struggling to figure out what to do with my two days of allotted freedom — and I imagine you may feel similar.

So I decided to make things a little easier for all of us, and put together a quick little weekend guide for you to peruse through. Note that most of these events are COVID-19-conscious, but please exercise caution and use your own judgement.

Without further ado, let’s get to it.

🌆 5 fun things to do around Portland this weekend

📚 Read: The Night Always Comes by Willy Vlautin.

Why: It’s a timely story about gentrification in Portland written by a local author. The novel follows 30-year-old Lynette as she juggles bad credit, and multiple careers, as she struggles to pay off the home she lives in with her mother and brother. From the description: “While she has enough for the down payment, she needs her mother to cover the rest of the asking price. But a week before they’re set to sign the loan papers, her mother gets cold feet and reneges on her promise, pushing Lynette to her limits to find the money they need.” You can get the novel here

🎤 Watch: Comedy Party PDX at the Honey Latte Cafe.

Why: Tickets are a cool $12 and you’ll get to see standup legends like Adam Pasi, Bruce Gray, Kelly Ryan, and Tory Ward perform some killer sets, plus, a little birdie told me that you can snag an AMAZING vegetarian breakfast burrito there all day, every day. Plus, there’s never a bad time for some good belly laughs. Tickets can be purchased here

🎶 Listen: Lost Ox at The Goodfoot Pub & Lounge.

Why: This local band is a mix of “outlaw funk” and classic Americana. Tickets are between $12 and $15, there’s going to be good food and cheap drinks, and staff are requiring proof of vaccination in order to attend. Lost Ox has been around since 2017 and has been bringing the beats ever since. You can find tickets here

👻 Go: Take a tour of Portland’s old red light district in the Hawthorne neighborhood and hear some creepy ghost stories.

Why: Portland has a LOT of weird, eerie history soaked into its streets and going for a stroll through them can be like stepping back in time. Tickets are a little costly at $40, but the tour is definitely worth it. The guides are COVID-conscious and attendees must wear their masks while on the tour. Plus, these tours are offered all month long so if this weekend doesn’t pan out then you’ve got time to spare. Prepare to get scared and get your tickets here.

😋 Eat: Brunch at the EastBurn Public House.

Why: Do we even need to say it? Portland and brunch go together like bacon and eggs — and EastBurn is bringing the biscuits. Their menu has a gorgeous lineup of brunchable items from their crab cake eggs benedict with jalapeno and roasted red pepper to their Herbs de Provence tofu scramble (for our plant-based buddies). Also, their cocktail menu includes $5 mimosas and a watermelon rhubarb refresher. EastBurn is still operating under some of their pandemic restrictions so be sure to bring your mask along. Sound tasty? Here’s where you can find their hours and menus

🤔 Trivia answer (and winners) revealed!

You’re a smart bunch of cookies, aren’t you!

Shoutouts to Brian R., Greg H., Brian C. (thank you for the cool information about Ducati motorcycles! I had no idea they were made in our sister city!), Steven S., and Hannah H. for correctly guessing that Portland’s newest sister city is the one, the only, Bologna, Italy! Honorary shoutout to Suzanne V. with Utrecht, The Netherlands, however, that city is technically a "friendship" city to Portland.

Although it’s one of many (I guess you could say that Portland’s has a pretty big family) sister cities, PDX and Bologna have held this bond since June 5, 2003. There’s definitely some family resemblance between the two: We value walkable neighborhoods and local food, quirky craftsmanship and zany students, we both host Nike Headquarters and have a public living-room bustling with people. We also have Slow-Foodies and coffee shops, a passionate independent streak, and a regional pride that runs deep.

Thank you for playing trivia with us this week! We’re often playing games like this as well as I Spy (a game where we challenge you to identify a location in our city with only a zoomed in photo as the clue) with our Bridgeliner Unabridged members.

And guess what? For the month of August, we’re running a special 50% discount on membership. What’s that mean? You can get all of the extra fun of being a member for just $40 a year (that’s literally $4 a month). Wanna join the fun? You can sign up here

🙋 One more thing …

Thank you for reading all the way to the end.

That’s it for today folks, wish me luck because this weekend I’m meeting up with some of my Dungeons & Dragons buddies (we’re all vaccinated and have been very careful throughout this whole shebang) — and I’m going to need some high rolls as we dive into the next part of our campaign.

Also, honorary shoutout to my little brother Donald, who’s graduating with his master’s degree this Sunday!

Anyway, that’s a wrap for this week, have a beautiful weekend, please stay safe out there, and I’ll see you in your inbox on Tuesday.
