DECLARATIONS

A biweekly newsletter by artist/writer Declan Shalvey.
Greetings from picturesque County Clare, where I've been taking a few days out, away from the grind of Dublin. No rest for the wicked though, still plenty to do...
ALL THE LATEST
-I've taken a mini break between projects, visiting my mum and taking care of the remaining Process Edition tiers (more below), which are all being sent out.

-I wrapped up TIME BEFORE TIME #6 last week, felt good to get another self-contained done in one under my belt, and play around in the sandbox we've made this year. Handed in the lettering pass too, can't wait to see Chris O'Halloran's colours on my pages.

-PROJECT CRIMSON is moving along nicely. I'm really just overseeing things at this point, but it's all starting to come together, which is the magic part of the process.

-PROJECT GRAVITY: I'm told news on this will be breaking in the next few weeks, will be VERY glad to not keep this secret any longer.

-PROJECT GRAVITY PART DEUX: I'm deep into the layouts for this, want to lay out all the chapters before I start drawing, but will have to see how much I can get done before I'm back in the studio.

-PROJECT BOUNTY; I'm very much in layout mode on this too at the moment. Once I'm back in studio the plan is to work on drawing GRAVITY full throttle, and when that's done, get started on BOUNTY.

-Been spending a lot of time trying to plan out some projects. Pretty exciting stuff on the horizon.
COVER DEC
A few covers of mine were revealed online in the last week or so. Let's have a look, shall we?

First up is my cover for TIME BEFORE TIME #7. This issue sees a new story arc begin and with it, myself and Sasha decised to switch up the colour scheme for the cover dress, and I shifted the cover colour palette to suit. We'll apply this shift to the Vol 2 trade too. I've always wanted to try something like this, to keep an ongoing book fresh and interesting.
Next, we have my variant cover for Kyle Higgins and Marcelo Costa's RADIANT BLACK. I really enjoyed this, sometimes it's just fun to draw an iconic superhero-type shot. This hits the sweet pot of 'iconic hero shot + design use of symbol' covers I like to do. Working on this made me think I could do a killer Green Lantern.
Last but not least is my variant cover for BRZRKR #5. It's a 1:100 incentive variant, so it'll be hard to get a hold of it. Good luck! This was a fun one to do, bit of a change of pace from other work I had on at the time. Plus, not every day you get to draw Gladiator Keanu!
That's all for now, I just wanted to show all these here as they were all revealed on the same day, and I bust my ass on them all, so wanted to make sure they didn't get memory-holed.
Oh, by the way, the original art for the Radiant Black and BRZRKR cover, as well as my recent Walk Dead piece are now for sale over at Cadence Comic Art.

BEEN KICKSTARTIN'
So, as I think I mentioned in the last newsletter, the basic Kickstarter tier for the Time Before Time Process Edition was sent out to all relevant backers, as was the digital one but the rest were still due.

A few days ago I came back down to County Clare to my mum's house, she's been sorting out all the fulfilment for me. I needed to get down to sign specific books and bring along some of the extras for higher tiers. Wasn't a bad way to spend a couple of days, packing everything up with my mum, cups of tea when needed, etc.
Saying that, it was a lot of work!
Been nice to have a change of scenery again, get a break from the drawing board. Still been working, variaous bits of writing and development, some layouts etc, but on unplugging a bit more.
Some of the extras for some backers;
bookmark, Syndicate stickers, Art Deco stickers.
My exclusive TBT Kickstarer print, signed by Rory McConville, Joe Palmer, Chris O'Halloran, Hassan Otssmane-Elhaou and myself.
All these packets are all being sent out at the moment, so finally, after all that... the Kickstarter is finished! I owe someone a skype call, but otherwise all is taken care of. Been an interesting (and exhausting) experience, but I'm VERY happy with the book, especially the Collector Edition. The gold foil cover came out sooooo nice.

It seems more than a few people missed out on the Kickstarter campaign while it was running. I have some copies left over so in about a month, I'm going to offer up some of the Process/Collector Editions via my shop. They won't have all the fancy bonus items, but for those who would like to get a copy of the books themselves, they'll be available soon.
PROCESS
I thought it would be good to record my colouring process for the TIME BEFORE TIME #6 cover. Have you ordered it yet? The only way to read it for sure is to order the issue from your local retailer, as I can't promise it'll be collected!

Anyway, here's a timelapse of me colouring the cover. Hope you enjoy!

And for a little more process, here's Page 2 of the issue, both the pencils and inks. I think Chris O'Halloran is currently colouring the issue, looking forward to working with him for a whole issue, we've only worked together on some covers an a couple of short stories.
DEC DECS
Louise Sprouse Stole My Heart
(And I Have Two Hours To Get It Back)

By Kyle Starks
Published on Gumroad

I'm not one for digital comics but what I do like about them is how you can just drop a story out of nowhere, which can be such a wonderful treat, to read something you didn't know you were looking for. Louise Sprouse Stole My Heart (And I Have Two Hours To Get It Back) is one of those stories, a madcap tale of assassinry by Kyle Starks (6 Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton!, Assassin Nation)

I really loved this, essentially about an assassin forced to go off grid for a while and chooses to hide out at an old hotel where he spent his childhood summers. It's fun, moving and told in a really entertaining way. Really refreshing to read a done-in-ine story like this.

'Demon Days: Mariko' #1
by Peach Momoko
Lettered by GHJKLJH
Published by Marvel Comics

Peach Momoko was a name I was completely unfamiliar with until about a year ago when some variant covers were needed for DIE!NAMITE and she was suggested. What a revelation she's been, I picked the first of her Yashida Saga issues (Demon Days: X-Men' ) a while back and loved this new spin she had on all these Marvel characters. Mariko #1 continues this novel reimagining with lush and stunning visuals. I mean, the art is just gorgeous.

There are more chapters coming in this sage, presented in these one-shot formats and I have to say, fair play to Marvel for trying this out. I can't wait for the next installment.
