Ahoy Sailor!

Happy September! Fall is just around the corner, which means cooler weather and better breezes are on their way! We thought July was crazy with weather...and then August rolled through. Heavy afternoon thunderstorms, shifty wind and even a tornado just a few miles away made August one to remember!

Looking to enjoy the last few months of the season? We have a few spaces left in our ASA courses toward the middle and end of October if you're trying to get that end of season certification in! This is also the best time of year for sailing (according to our newsletter writer) so come out and rent with us this September!

What's Happening at Annapolis Sailing School
Our third Dinghy Day of the summer had perfect weather and wind! Three of our KBC members were lucky enough to solo our Hobie Getaway last month.
Nothing better than a summer barbecue on the water! Our KBC director Ian catered the entire event for our members using his amazing chef skills!
Remnants of Hurricane Ida moving north at the end of August led to heavy storms, flooding and a nearby tornado in Annapolis on September 1! No damage to our boats or the school thankfully.
In July we finally brought our new-to-us Sabre 34 to the sailing school! We're excited to announce that we've decided on a name - Light Sabre! Can you tell we have some Star Wars fans on staff?
Staff Member of the Month: Michaela!
Introducing Staff Member of the Month! Every month, we'll highlight one of our staff members, their awesome contributions to the Sailing School, and what they like to do outside of sailing!
If you're looking for a star sailing instructor and scheduling pro all in one, Michaela is who you're looking for! She's our assistant office manager and works side-by-side with Brenda to keep the school running smoothly by handling phone calls, check-ins, paperwork and more! Michaela is also one of our ASA 101 instructors and has taught dozens of adult sailors, giving them the best experience in the classroom and on the water. She started working at the sailing school when she was just 15 as a KidShip instructor and moved up the ranks to senior staff! Outside of the sailing school, she's taking college classes, teaching her cat new tricks and learning about interior design! Fun fact: she's also a world traveler! She's visited numerous countries in Europe and South America and is always ready for her next adventure!
Practice Makes Progress - A Sailor Success Story
There's only one thing better than experiencing the joy of sailing — getting to teach someone else and help them experience that same joy! Carrie's sailing journey has mainly taken place right here at Annapolis Sailing School. She's been in our KeelBoat Club longer than almost every other member and has taken advantage of so many of our courses, clinics, races and social events over the last few years. She's grown to be quite the skilled sailor and racer, so it's no surprise that she wanted to be an instructor! Carrie passed her ASA 201 certification course in August along with two of our current staff members, qualifying her to teach ASA 101. As a fun bonus, Pat (one of our captains and ASA 103 and 104 instructors) made her a congratulatory banner! 
Hurricane Season is Still Going Strong!
When most people think of places that get struck by hurricanes, they're thinking of tropical locales, not Maryland. However, we do still feel the effects of hurricanes here, even if it's not a direct hit. Most of the time, it's just remnants of storms that strike further south making their way up to Annapolis, giving us heavy rain, wind and flooding.

We haven't always been lucky though. Climate change is making the ocean warmer further north, creating better conditions for hurricanes to remain strong. Fun fact: there's a marker in the Ellen Moyer Park in Annapolis (right on Edgewood Road before the sailing school) that shows how high floodwaters rose in Back Creek! Photo credit: Rick Nelson
History of Major Hurricanes in Annapolis!
Unnamed Hurricane of 1933
This hurricane is most notable for creating the inlet at Ocean City, MD! Storm surge in the bays surrounding Ocean City washed away three streets at the town's southern tip, creating the wide inlet we see today. Storm surge was close to 6.5 feet in Annapolis! 
1954: Hurricane Hazel
Hazel made landfall as a category 4 storm near the border of the Carolinas. The storm flooded much of the region, including most of the grounds at the Naval Academy. Many crab pots in the bay were also destroyed. Storm surge reached almost 5.5 feet!
1955: Hurricane Connie
Connie made landfall in North Carolina as a category 2 storm before moving up to the Chesapeake region. Strong winds and waves in the bay capsized and wrecked a 125-foot schooner named the Levin J. Marvel, which left port in unseaworthy condition and led to many drowning. Storm surge reached almost 5 feet.
2003: Hurricane Isabel
Isabel is known for intense flooding and loss of power across the whole Mid-Atlantic region. Many of the small shops and restaurants in downtown Annapolis flooded, including the Market House close to Ego Alley. Storm surge from Isabel reached just over 7.5 feet — the highest surge recorded at the Ellen Moyer Park!
