WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS &
LIGHTING THE CHRIST CANDLE

CALL TO WORSHIP – (responsive)
ONE: In love, God has created a world of abundance for all to share.
ALL:  We come to give thanks to God, the Creator.
ONE:  In love, God sent us Jesus to show us how to live abundant life.
ALL:  We come to learn the way of Christ.
ONE:  In love, God blesses us with the Spirit so we might have abundant joy.
ALL:  We come to rejoice in the Spirit.
ONE:  Come, let us worship!

OPENING HYMN: MV #1 Let Us Build a House

MORNING PRAYER (unison)
Hospitable God, you invite us to a banquet
where the last may be first, and the humble and the mighty trade places.
Let us share your abundance with no fear of scarcity;
let us greet strangers as angels you have sent!
Send your Spirit now so that we may find a place at your table and welcome others with radical hospitality.
In the name of Jesus, Guest at all our tables, we pray. AMEN

WISDOM from the PSALMS – Psalm 81: 1, 10-16

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (responsive)
ALL:  Merciful God, we find it hard to see in ourselves the things our society so admires and serves—power, wealth, and access that forget mutual love.
ONE:  We fail to see our allegiance to these dangerous gods—rushing for places of honor, scorning the humble and lowly, supporting systems that survive on
greed and abuse.
ALL:  Forgive us when we are fearful that there is not enough.
Remind us that you are enough.
Teach us your generosity.
Teach us your world-changing humility.
Teach us your expansive love.
Transform us and heal our lives.  AMEN

Women Like Barari Are Catalysts for Change

Barari remembers the way the other farmers in her village laughed at her when she began to farm differently. “It is a waste of time,” they said. “It will never work.” Here’s how it turned out.

Barari learned life-saving farming skills through a Canadian Foodgrains Bank program called Scaling-Up Conservation Agriculture in East Africa.

The program is important because most of the African continent’s soil is poor quality compared to other parts of the world. In many areas the soil is so eroded that it is no longer productive. Conservation agriculture is key to improving the soil, which in turn saves lives.

The United Church works in partnership with agencies that coordinate life-changing agricultural projects across the globe. Your generosity helps farmers feed their families and community.

OUR CONTEXT. JESUS' WAY. GOD'S LOVE
August 11, 2021

God’s love is ‘power within’, a dignity shared with all of life to become more fully human and part of creation.  Much of our history has celebrated ‘power over’ which has been destroying our planet earth without regard for sustainability and limiting our humanity.
In this month’s stories, listen for the Other Voices which have been silenced for too long.  Stories have been organized around the 3-fold pattern of the journey to the cross:
  1. OUR CONTEXT (pg 2) includes our Communities of Faith, Operation Sharing, Camp Tanner and the work of the OURS Committee re the safety of our extended family in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
  2. JESUS’ WAY (pg 5) includes prayer for each other, book reports of Norwich’s 200-year church anniversary, finding God in the Pandemic, SKYLIGHT Festival and info on Octopus.
  3. GOD’S LOVE (pg 8) helps us become more human as we relate to God, to each other and to creation - our worship, our social and ecological justice initiatives.
