STORM HENRI INFO

It is likely that Henri may arrive in Orient on Sunday 8-22 as a Category One hurricane. Suffolk County Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services on behalf of the Town of Southold Emergency Management have issued the following: "Tropical Storm Henri is expected affect our area Sunday, August 22nd in the early morning hours. You should expect Tropical-to-Hurricane force winds, 3 or more inches of rain and a 3-5 foot tidal surge to coincide with high tides. Flooding is expected in low-lying areas."

While we all hope that Henri's impact will be minimal, please review the preparation information, precautions and links below:
  • Power outages are likely. PSEG has information about how to prepare for the storm and how to report and monitor outages. Have a look here. We recommend installing the PSEG app on your smart phone... and logging in now, before the storm.

  • Southold Town is posting information at the top of their web homepage.

  • In case of severe storm surge, the causeway between Orient and East Marion may be closed to all but emergency traffic. Plan to stay in Orient or west of the causeway for the duration.

  • It is possible that many branches and trees will fall into the streets and take down power lines. This may render some roads impassable. PSEG will need to ensure that fallen power lines are de-energized before road crews can clear debris. Have patience.

  • For those without generators to power their well pumps, now is a good time to fill your bathtub with water for non-drinking purposes. In addition fill clean jugs or milk bottles with fresh water for drinking.

  • Charge your phones, laptops and devices now.

  • Ensure you have flashlights with fresh batteries.

  • If you have a battery operated radio, charge it or install fresh batteries.

  • Move cars away from trees and branches that might fall.

  • Secure outdoor furniture.

  • If you have a washer/dryer today is a good time to prepare clean clothes. Also wash dirty dishes. If the power goes out for an extended period of time, clean clothes and dishes will be in short supply.

  • WLNG 92.1 and Cable channel 22 will have storm status updates.

Orient Association will email additional information as we gather it.
