Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Jesus protests against human customs being given the weight of divine law, while the essence of God’s law is ignored. True uncleanness comes not from external things, but from the intentions of the human heart. Last week Jesus told us “the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (John 6:63). Now James says God has given us birth by the word of truth. We who were washed in the word when we were born in the font return to it every Sunday to ask God to create in us clean hearts.
Readings

For this week, donate some money to an organization that is important to you. Even $5 can make a difference. Not sure where to donate? Some ideas include the Northfield Township Food Pantry, Youth Services, or a designated donation to St. Philip to help offset the shipping cost for the Church World Service school kits.

Thank you for your generosity and participation in making a difference in the community!

Fall faith formation returns to St. Philip, starting this September. There's something for everyone! Click or tap the image below for our new line-up of opportunities.

YOUR PARTICIPATION IS REQUESTED! In order to help us plan for faith formation this fall - including a group order for the participant journal for GLOW Exploration - would you kindly fill out this very short survey by next Tuesday, August 31?
Access the survey here.
Blood Drive
On Thursday, September 30, Vitalant will be at the church from 2:30 to 7:30 PM for a blood drive. As a thank you for donating, donors will receive a coupon for a free pint from Culvers and there will be sloppy joes served for after your donation. To schedule an appointment please call 877.258.4825 or visit vitalant.org. Select “Donate” or "Make an Appointment;" login, then scroll down the webpage to search by group code VW16.

CWS School Kits
We are partnering again with Church World Service to provide school kits for families both locally and globally who need our support. Once you choose an item to purchase, click the "Submit and Sign Up" button at the bottom of the page. The next screen has a box to add quantity of items you wish to donate. We will also need to pay the shipping fee so monetary donations are also welcome. Make checks payable to St. Philip Lutheran Church and put "School Kits" in the memo. The school supplies sales have begun, so take advantage.

Items can be dropped off either at church or Terri Schlangen's house. Pick up can also be arranged.  If you have any questions, please contact Terri 847-707-1044 or tjdini1@gmail.com.

We also need help on Sunday, September 12, following the morning service, to assemble school kits. Contact Terri to help or just show up. We will assemble the kits in the fellowship hall (please wear a face mask). Many hands make light work!
