Hi Friends!

We're so excited to see (and talk with) y'all again. It's hard to believe, but the summer has ended even though the hot weather persists. We hope y'all had a restful summer and a good first week back. We cannot wait to see you at the farm, but before we do, let's introduce ourselves.

Lauren Ohler (she/her): Hi! I’m a sophomore biology major pursuing a certificate in Scientific Computation and Data Sciences! I’m also in running club and work in a plant research lab that studies the chemical composition of Arabidopsis (a flowering weed). My favorite veggies are carrots. I can't wait to see everyone out at the farm.

Nikki Hammond (she/her): Hey, I'm a 3rd year Communication and Leadership major, with a minor in Russian and a certificate in Non-Profits and Social Entrepreneurship. I have worked at the farm since my freshman year and am excited to start my 2nd year as Co-Lead! I'm also in Absolute Pitch A Cappella and Delta Xi Nu Multicultural Sorority. I love to grow tomatoes because they are delicious and beautiful.

Now that you know who we are, come introduce yourself to us at your workdays (because we are actually holding community workdays this fall! yay!).

Love from the farm,
Lauren and Nikki
Over the summer, we hosted 18 workdays and donated 180 (!!!) lbs of produce to UT Outpost, including lots of tomatoes, chard, squash, and collards.

Come to the Farm!

You can volunteer on the farm every Sunday this semester from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, starting August 29th. Due to the rise of the Delta Variant, we are STRONGLY encouraging masks while volunteering with us to keep our team and volunteers safe. We are lucky enough to have a 1/2 acre of outdoor space and will separate volunteers into small groups. Your safety is our priority when you volunteer!

For more info on workday protocol, including how to get to the farm and where to park, check here
We still have plots left for the fall, so email us if you're interested.

Farmer's Favorites

With the beginning of the semester here, it's important to remember to take time to breathe and relax. Here's what bringing the Microfarm team joy right now:
  1. The Spotify music podcast Key Notes, especially this Radiohead episode
  2. The Loki TV show. [Editor's note: the Loki soundtrack is perfect].
  3. Lemon honey tea.
  4. HBO's Succession
  5. The track "Fallen Fruit" off Lorde's new album.
  6. Being accepted by our roommate's dog.

By the way, Microfarm is one of the 6 projects under the Campus Environmental Center. Our fellow CEC friends do some cool work that's worth checking out here
