Outdoor Meeting for Worship, Sunday, September 19 @ 9 AM

Outdoor Meeting for Worship will be held rain or shine this Sunday at 9 AM on the back lawn of the meetinghouse (or under the shelter of the roof in case of rain), in addition to our usual 10:30 AM hybrid worship. Online sign-ups are no longer required.

Please note these additional parameters:
  • No chairs from the meetinghouse will be available. Seating is bring-your-own chair (or blanket) and will be socially distanced. Household groups can sit together.  Friends will be able to use the bathrooms in the meetinghouse.
  • To ensure physical distancing, attendees should plan to be seated at their place for the full hour.
  • Please do not sign up or attend if you:
    • have recently had any symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, shortness of breath, or loss of taste;
    • have recently been in close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Giant Children's Meeting for Worship, Sunday, September 19 @ 9 AM

PYM Giant Children's Meeting is back, now on 3rd Sundays.  It’s “giant” because everyone is invited! It’s “children’s meeting” because it's a space to nurture the spiritual lives and Quaker identity of young people.  September's theme is Welcoming All!  Register on the PYM website.

Hybrid Meeting for Worship, Sunday, September 19 @ 10:30 AM

Meeting for Worship will start at 10:30 am, both online and in person at the meetinghouse.  For those attending in person, the following guidelines will be in effect:
  • We recommend that people be vaccinated before returning to the meetinghouse.
  • We are once again asking that everyone wear masks while they are in the meetinghouse.
  • Households may sit together, but attenders from different households should spread themselves out within the meeting room.
  • For the time being, there will be no social hour in the meeting house, so please plan to take your conversations outside after the rise of meeting.
  • Please do not sign up or attend if you:
    • have recently had any symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, shortness of breath, or loss of taste;
    • have recently been in close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

To get an item included in the announcements after Meeting for Worship, please e-mail Worship & Ministry Committee with the details by Friday night. Be sure to include all relevant dates, times, and locations as well as the name of a contact person for more information.  This will allow the information to be pasted into the chat window during announcements.

While Friends are encouraged to invite others to our virtual meeting for worship -- just as they would to an in-person meeting -- please do not post these links to social media or other Internet sites.  While some meetings are hosting global meetings with hundreds of participants, we are trying, as best we can in these times, to replicate the feel of our own weekly meeting for worship.

Online Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business, Sunday, September 19 @ 12:30 PM

Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business will begin on Zoom at the slightly later start time of 12:30 PM, to give Friends worshipping at the meetinghouse time to get home.  The agenda and documents will be available for reading in advance on the meeting's website.

The Zoom link will be the same one as for Meeting for Worship.

Worship Last Sunday @ CHFM

Approximately 25 Friends were at the meetinghouse (including a visitor from Ethiopia and Friends from Abington, Gwynedd, and Richland Monthly Meetings) and just over 20 Friends were on Zoom from near and far (Florida) for hybrid meeting for worship.  Six messages were offered out of the silence.  The microphone and closed captioning are making messages from the meetinghouse more audible and accessible to Friends on Zoom.

Thanks to Tee Bushnell, who did a great job in her first Sunday as a Zoom host!  If you are happy that worship on Zoom continues to be available, your help is needed with this job.  Thanks also to Jude Brandt, who set up the computer at the meetinghouse.  If you are happy to be worshipping back in the meetinghouse, help make hybrid worship happen by pitching in in this role.  Send an email to onlineworshipsupport@chestnuthillquakers.org to find out more or to volunteer for either of these roles.  There's training available and neither requires job requires technical expertise.

Midweek Meeting for Worship, Tuesday, September 21 @ 9 AM

CHFM offers midweek worship on Tuesday mornings from 9 to 10 via Zoom. The stable link for the Zoom sessions is https://zoom.us/j/95949514802?pwd=KzBRWHZWL0QyS3JOYWlVbnlyU2p4dz09,  We will have waiting worship for the first 30 minutes and then we plan to read excerpts from the new edition of Faith and Practice, followed by worship sharing.  All are welcome.

From Office & Administration Committee

Office Committee is seeking a new parking attendant and back-up event facilitator to work with Cedrick Wright on larger rental events at the meetinghouse, which mostly happen on weekend afternoons and evenings.  The parking attendant arrives half an hour before an event, opens the upper lot, sets up signs to direct traffic to the upper lot, and helps direct traffic for the first hour of the event.  At the end of the event (4 or 5 hours later), the parking attendant returns to put away the signs and close the lot.  When serving as back-up event facilitator, this person would coordinate setup and cleanup for events, and guide renters in following guidelines for building use and parking.  Up to 8 hours, usually on Saturdays, at an hourly rate starting around $15.  Interested individuals, please send your contact information and work history to Robin Smith, meeting secretary, at secretary@chestnuthillquakers.org.

From Chestnut Hill Friends

  • As many of you know, Eileen Flanagan traveled twice this summer to Northern Minnesota to support the Indigenous-led camps opposing the Line 3 Pipeline. She is extremely grateful for the prayers and financial support Friends offered. In this blog post, she shares some of her spiritual learning from living at Red Lake Treaty Camp.
  • Mary Day Kent will be speaking about Afghan asylum-seekers as part of an outstanding webinar for International Peace Day on Sunday, September 19, 2:30-4 pm.  She will be joining Ambassador Thomas Graham, who served almost three decades at the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, and Erin Hunt, of the International Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons.  RSVP here to receive the Zoom link.
  • Jude Brandt is participating in the City to Shore MS Bike Ride fundraiser on Saturday, September 25.  You can support her at this site or by searching City to Shore 2021 and donating by entering her name.
  • From Pia St. Onge:  Please consider participating in the Miles for Migraine on Saturday, October 2, along Forbidden Drive.    If you would like to register for one of the events and would like to form a team, email pia.st.onge@gmail.com.  Otherwise, you may wish to sponsor Pia’s walk and donate by clicking here

Zoom Help & Tutorials

A few other notes about Zoom:
  • A small number of Friends are making themselves available for assistance with technical issues before or during Meeting for Worship.  You can email that group at OnlineWorshipSupport@chestnuthillquakers.org; please also use that address to reach out during Meeting for Worship if you have technical trouble. If you have trouble connecting, please check the Zoom system status page before emailing to see if there are any system-level outages.
  • A particularly Quakerly Zoom tip:  Look to the Light!  If you arrange yourself for a Zoom meeting with a window or a lamp in front of you rather than behind you, we'll all be able to enjoy each other's familiar faces.
  • The links above should take you directly to Zoom meetings.  If, for whatever reason, the link does not work, you can open the Zoom app, click join meeting, and enter the meeting ID number.
  • When Meeting for Worship begins, everyone's microphone will be muted by the host.  If you feel moved to give ministry, you can unmute your microphone.  You will be able to hear the ministry of others even while your microphone is muted.  When your ministry concludes, please mute yourself again to reduce background noise.
  • If you call in by phone, you can use *6 to mute and unmute yourself.
