Introducing Bay View High School

Students have attended Sir John A. Macdonald High School for decades, however over a year ago, the school decided to change its name. The new name is Bay View High School.

"We enlisted the help of students in our community as well as staff and alumni to come together and help us come up with a new name," said vice-principal Ryan Connors.

Event dates and locations will be announced very soon. As we continue to open up more, Regional Council will be meeting in Council Chambers within the next few weeks.

Federal Election 2021

School is back in session!
As we all settle into our new routines this fall, there are more vehicles on the road than we've seen in nearly two years. School buses, Halifax Transit, Bay Rides and commercial vehicles are all returning to the roads and increasing wait times. Road crews are moving as fast as they can to do asphalt rehabilitation, install traffic calming and a new guardrail on Hammonds Plains Road at Northwood. If you have questions about work on a municipal road, please call 311.

If your question is about a provincial road, please contact the Nova Scotia Operation Contact Centre at 1-844-696-7737 or email tir-occ@novascotia.ca.

Please keep safety top of mind and drive to the conditions of the roadway.

Motion: That North West Community Council direct the Chief Administrative Officer to return to North West Community Council with a report on the intersection of Hammonds Plains and Lucasville roads to include:

2. appropriately plan for transit in this intersection;
3. increase pedestrian safety in this intersection;
4. provide recommendations on lifting the restrictions in Schedule J of the Hammonds Plains, Beaver Bank and Upper Sackville Land Use By-law, entitled “Beaverbank / Hammonds Plains Growth Control Areas”, to permit new connector roads off Hammonds Plains.

September 14 Council Meeting
This Tuesday, Committee of the Whole will debate the amendments to the RED BOOK. Municipal Design Guidelines (aka Red Book) were developed to provide consistency in design and construction issues among developers, consultants and contractors within the Halifax Regional Municipality. These specifications are to be used as the minimum standards to be met in the design of streets, drainage, street trees & lighting, and associated municipal infrastructure.

Read: Proposed Administrative Order 2021-003-OP, Respecting Amendments to Municipal Design Guidelines - Municipal Design Guidelines (Red Book) Update [Large 15 MB PDF]

Regional Council will begin after Committee of the Whole and includes these agenda items, and more:
11.1.1 Second Reading Proposed By-law V-200, Respecting Immobilization of Vehicles on Private Property – By-law for Parking and Immobilization on Private Property [PDF]

11.1.5 Award – Request for Tender 21-256 Transit Park and Ride Phase 2 – Bedford [PDF]

11.2 ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY STANDING COMMITTEE
11.2.1 Review HRM Litter Receptacle Placement Criteria
[PDF]

12.1 Councillor Lovelace
Motion:
That Halifax Regional Council request a staff report to fund the NSUARB ordered stormwater right-of-way cost as general tax, since all municipal roads are general rated and paid for by all taxpayers; and, all dwelling and commercial properties in HRM benefit from effectively managed stormwater on municipal roadways, not including properties that are essentially ancillary to a dwelling.

COMMEMORATING NAME CHANGE, MI’KMAW ARTIST ALAN SYLIBOY CREATED A MURAL FOR SCHOOL’S MAIN LOBBY

Former Sir John A. Macdonald High School now called Bay View High School.

The high school in Tantallon, N.S., has a new name, among other changes. Students have attended Sir John A. Macdonald High School for decades. The new name is Bay View High School. The decision to change the name of the school came a year and a half ago because Canada's first prime minister played a role in the creation of the residential school system and the Indian Act of 1867; administrators thought a more inclusive name was needed. Commemorating the name change, Mi'kmaw artist Alan Syliboy created a mural for the school's main lobby.

Reached at his studio in Truro, N.S., Syliboy said it means a lot to him to see a piece of his art, as well as other Indigenous displays, set up throughout the school."That's a vehicle for change and it helps to bring the world to be aware of other cultures," said Syliboy, who crafted the mural from several individual pieces of his artwork. "I think Indigenous people have been invisible in this landscape for a long, long time, so change is good."
