Abernethy Sub Administrator

Hello Abernethy Families,

I am writing to inform you that Lisa Ditto, PPS Teacher On Special Assignment, will be our sub Administrator for the next two weeks, 9/13/21- 9/24/2021. Unfortunately, due to an urgent family emergency that still needs my attention, I will not be able to be on campus. Please know that I am not ill, but I do need to be with my family at this difficult time.

Lisa will bring lots of care and experience to our community as she assists the Safety, Office, and our Instructional Leadership Teams with all the details of the beginning of the school year.  Lisa was our MTSS Teacher on Special Assignment, working from the district office and knows our students, staff, and systems really well.

Please contact the office if you have any questions or concerns at 503-916-6190. We want to know how to make your Back to School experience positive and safe for your family.

It's a joy to serve our school community,

Dr. Christie M. Petersen

Welcome Back from Abernethy’s Counseling Program

Greetings and welcome to our new and returning Abernethy families!  The Counseling Team is excited to work with your child(ren) this year.  It was truly wonderful seeing their sparkling eyes the first week of school.  We know there are smiles behind those masks.  We hope the transition to full-time school has gone well for your child.  We want to introduce our team to you as a resource for your child and family this year. Please see our introductions and contact information below and take a look at our website for community resources and information about our program and services. Abernethy Counseling Website

Jenny Morgan: I am the full-time counselor working with Kindergarten through 3rd grade.  This is my 9th year at Abernethy and I am so excited to see the students in person this year.  I am the parent to an 8th grader at Mt. Tabor Middle School and 4th grader at Richmond Elementary.  Currently the topic of constant debate in our family is whether we should get a dog or a cat.  We are split evenly, so this debate may continue for quite some time!

Please contact me with any questions or concerns - my email is jmorgan1@pps.net and my work cell is 503-679-4799.

Jessica Blei: I am so pleased to be back at Abernethy for my second year, even more glad to be in person. This year I am half time at Abernethy. I will be present on Tuesdays, Thursday mornings and Fridays. My focus will be on supporting the 4th and 5th grade students and facilitating small groups for all grades.

This summer, my family enjoyed camping in California and at the beach. We are experiencing the transition of parenting a High Schooler(!) along with our 5th grader and our pandemic puppy, Abby.

I am already inspired by your children and looking forward to a great year on this counseling team. I can be reached by email at jeblei@pps.net and I can receive confidential messages and texts at 503-308-1027.

Ashley Mote: Hello Abernethy Families! My name is Ashley Mote and this year I am incredibly excited to work with you and your students as a school counseling intern. Thank you for welcoming me to your wonderful community!

I am a graduate student at Portland State University studying to be an effective school counselor. Part of my educational experience is being placed at schools across the Portland community to learn from you, your students, and your counselors. I’m really grateful for this opportunity!

I’ll be working closely with the counselor team this year to deliver social and emotional curriculum to third grade students in the classroom, lead small groups in developing social and emotional skills, and be an overall asset to the Abernethy community.

If you have questions or would like to reach out. Thank you again for being so welcoming, and welcome back to a great year at Abernethy Elementary School!

PE Brain Break

Hello Abernethy Students and Families,

I wanted to share with you my website and YouTube channel if you need brain break ideas for the classroom.  Everything on the website can be a brain break, but I highlighted a few and made a page for them.  Be sure to scroll down for themed activities to find one appropriate for your grade level.  Have fun!

Also, I am encouraging students to bring water bottles to class since the fountains aren't ready and there aren't always cups for the water dispensers that have been provided in the meantime. Students can fill their water bottles from the water dispensers with their teacher’s permission.

If you want me to add some activities to the website, let me know.  There are some great mindfulness activities too!  Have a great week!

Picture Day : Rescheduled

To ensure safety measures are followed closely with set logistics and to allow time to gather vaccination information from our LifeTouch Team, picture day is being rescheduled to October 21. More information to follow in future Announcements.

Shared Space Reminder

Reminder to drivers dropping off and picking up kids please do not let cars idle while waiting near the school as a courtesy to our many walking families and for safety as students are in a hurry and cannot easily tell if the car will be pulling away.

We understand that our shared space around the school is cramped so extra care, kindness and patience is so appreciated.

COVID Procedures and Testing

COVID Safety
We will be operating under COVID procedures published by PPS, in accordance with the Oregon Department of Education requirements. Masks will be required. Additionally, as PPS recently shared, district level communications will be notifying you when new information, including answers to your most common questions about this year’s health and safety measures, are added to the PPS.net/BacktoSchool2021 webpage. Most recently, they have information on the following topics posted: Lunch and Meals, Supplies, and COVID-19 Vaccination. PPS will continue to inform you as additional information is added to the webpage.

Covid Testing
In partnership with the Oregon Health Authority, PPS supports free COVID-19 screening testing to PPS students and staff. Screening testing is for individuals without symptoms or known exposure to COVID-19. Specific criteria for students are still being developed. PPS will also continue to offer diagnostic testing to students who display symptoms during the school day, more information and FAQ on the district’s testing procedures will be available throughout the week. Please complete the consent form and return to your child’s teacher today  COVID -19 General Consent Form to have on file in the nurse's office in case the need arises.

If you need a test, you can schedule an appointment with your family doctor or clinic, OHSU, or Multnomah County. For more info on testing: https://www.multco.us/novel-coronavirus-covid-19/covid-19-testing

Outside Lunch Time Setup Update

We have come a long way in 11 days! So far we have three outdoor seating areas- Alcove A, Covered Area B, and Alcove C. We will be eating outside for approximately 6 weeks as part of our Safety Plan B. We will move one class inside and when we have bad weather all three classes do fit in the cafeteria safely with 3 feet of spacing as outlined in our Safety Plan A.

For lunch recess, our PE Teacher, Jen Hartle, has supplied equipment for each class to use. At some point we may be able to resume play under the covered area. Thanks for everyone’s patience and understanding to make lunch as safe and fun as possible for all our K-5 students given the changing circumstances. We are a great team of teachers, students, staff, and families! Our community has done so much already.

We are working through having enough staff and essential volunteers to cover these three areas versus two areas daily.  Please see Urgent Call to apply to be an Essential Volunteer below and fill out your application today.

Second Community Call for Essential Lunchtime Volunteers

***Volunteers needed to help with set up, take down and supervision of our Outdoor Lunches.***

Thanks to everyone who came to help with our school clean-up on 8/28 and to Jess Quarles, Rose Caudillo, Christine Olsen, and Paul Coleman for their caring leadership. Amazingly, we were able to accomplish getting both of the alcove areas near the gym and cafeteria deep cleaned in a very short time! This week we received folding tables and folding benches for students to eat outside by class in one of three areas: Alcove A (near cafeteria), Covered area B, & Alcove C (near the gym) and we are working to get things all set up with seating and coverage.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up so far to become an essential volunteer so far.  However, we still need 2-3 volunteers M-F before and after lunch from 10:25-10:55am and 1:20-1:50pm to help set up and take down the 20 sets of folding plastic tables and benches that will be stored in either Alcove A & Alcove C. Our greatest need is to have daily help with set up and take down.

We also need another essential volunteer on Monday from 12:00-12:30 and on Tuesday 11:45-12:30 to assist with outdoor lunches/recess supervision.

You will need a current background check and to be fully vaccinated. The system to apply is open again to accept applications of potential candidates, and the background checks are good for 3 years. Please check the website and once you are able to complete the background check and receive approval please email Elise Darling at edarling@pps.net with the date and time you are available.

If you believe your background check is current and are interested in helping with lunch/recess right away, please email Elise Darling at edarling@pps.net with the date and time you are available.

So far things have been going well for our students, but we need your help to finish putting the final plans in place. When we eat inside, one grade level/ cohort at a time, we do not have the same need for coverage, so thank you all again for stepping up for safety for all.

Take care,
Dr. Christie M. Petersen

Essential Volunteer Update

In addition to the information above, we are working on a plan for existing volunteers to update their records through a Qualtrics Survey, similar to what staff filled out. In the meantime, Abernethy will continue to check COVID-19 vaccination cards.

Essential Volunteers and Visitors

  • We know that many schools will need essential volunteers to support supervision.
  • Visitors include any individual coming on campus for fewer than 15 minutes
  • Visitors will not need to verify their vaccination status; however, all visitors must follow PPS health and safety protocols (e.g. wearing a mask)
  • Any parent or family member coming on-site for a required meeting for their child (IEP meeting, 504 meeting, etc.), is considered a visitor and will need to follow safety protocols.
  • Volunteers include any individual who is on campus for longer than 15 minutes and may have the opportunity for unsupervised contact with students during school hours.
  • Volunteers must go through PPS background checks and need to provide proof of vaccination.
  • All Volunteers must be pre approved by the Principal.

Swiss Cheese Layered Health Measures

What is the Swiss Cheese Layered Health Measures and Graphic? How is it helpful for parents to share with their children?

Please review this graphic with your students to help them better understand the importance of each of the safety measures that have been implemented at school.

Layered health and safety measures will help us continue to safely operate and remain in full in person learning.  Each strategy is not perfect alone, but public health experts all agree that the best way to continue to protect staff and students is by using multiple strategies together consistently.  These strategies include, training, hand hygiene, regular cleaning and disinfecting, isolating symptomatic/exposed individuals, Covid testing, improving air flow and ventilation, maintaining physical distance when indoors, wearing masks while indoors and vaccinations.

For students and adults alike, having a graphic showing how each layer of the many safety measures works to protect them is not only informative, but it allows students to feel reassured about what everyone is doing at home and school to keep them safe so they can engage in daily learning.
