CHFM Bulletin:  September 9

Care of Friends

We are sorry to share that Peter Watkins, husband of Diane Dunning, died on Sunday, August 29.  Please hold Diane and her family in the Light.

Online Adult Class, Sunday, September 12 @ 9 AM

What Do Quakers Believe?  Part 1 of 4.  This fall, one adult class per month will be devoted to answering common questions about our Quaker faith. All classes in this series will be on Zoom only, and the Zoom link will be sent out before Sunday.  Each class will be organized around a question or prompt. Part 1: As a Quaker, I believe… Chestnut Hill Friends have a variety of ways to complete this statement. What holds us together? In this class, the first of a series on Quaker fundamentals, we will explore what beliefs unite us in the Spirit. Some Chestnut Hill Friends will be on hand to answer questions based on their own experience.  We invite you to look at these two short QuakerSpeak videos to help prepare for what will be a lively morning discussing the fundamentals of our faith.

Outdoor Meeting for Worship, Sunday, September 12 @ 9 AM

Please note these additional parameters:
  • No chairs from the meetinghouse will be available. Seating is bring-your-own chair (or blanket) and will be socially distanced. Household groups can sit together.  Friends will be able to use the bathrooms in the meetinghouse.

While Friends are encouraged to invite others to our virtual meeting for worship -- just as they would to an in-person meeting -- please do not post these links to social media or other Internet sites.  While some meetings are hosting global meetings with hundreds of participants, we are trying, as best we can in these times, to replicate the feel of our own weekly meeting for worship.

From Worship & Ministry Committee

We invite all who come to worship to come not only in search of connection, but also reaching to bring your own connection to Spirit into our corporate time together. When we enter worship we may feel as if we are empty vessels waiting to be filled up, but the power of Love is always flowing in us and through us, whether or not we can be aware of it.  Each of us has much to contribute, whether in a message or in helping to ground the silence we share.

Online Children's Program, Sunday, September 12 @ 10:45 AM

The Children’s RE Committee recognizes how challenging these times have been for families. While we missing seeing our families and children, we understand and respect the decisions not to be at the meetinghouse for in-person classes.  We will remain an online presence with weekly lessons. This year’s programming will be focused on Quakerism.  Lessons will use a variety of learning techniques, including hands-on activities and various new online formats which we will be introducing. The Fall Programming will begin on September 12th with classes held from 10:45 to 11:30. Any questions, contact Donna at fdscoord@chestnuthillquakers.org.

Pendle Hill Lecture Online: Radical Transformation – Long Overdue for the Religious Society of Friends, September 13, 7:30 PM

How have Friends collaborated with and sustained the global system of White Supremacy? George Fox, the founder of the Religious Society of Friends envisioned a revolutionary religion which professes the belief that every person has a direct relationship with God. Early Friends proclaimed our capacity for spiritual wholeness comes from the seed of God planted in our hearts. What structures are preventing Friends from living into these beliefs and growing God’s seed?  Speaker Vanessa Julye has been recognized among Quakers as having a calling to a ministry with a concern for helping the Religious Society of Friends become a whole blessed community. She travels throughout the country and abroad, with a travel minute from Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, speaking on this topic and leading workshops about racism focusing on its eradication and the healing of racism’s wounds.  Information and registration on the Pendle Hill website.

Midweek Meeting for Worship, Tuesday, September 14 @ 9 AM

CHFM offers midweek worship on Tuesday mornings from 9 to 10 via Zoom. The stable link for the Zoom sessions is https://zoom.us/j/95949514802?pwd=KzBRWHZWL0QyS3JOYWlVbnlyU2p4dz09,  We will have waiting worship for the first 30 minutes and then we plan to read excerpts from the new edition of Faith and Practice, followed by worship sharing.  All are welcome.

From Office & Administration Committee

Office Committee is seeking a new parking attendant and back-up event facilitator to work with Cedrick Wright on larger rental events at the meetinghouse, which mostly happen on weekend afternoons and evenings.  The parking attendant arrives half an hour before an event, opens the upper lot, sets up signs to direct traffic to the upper lot, and helps direct traffic for the first hour of the event.  At the end of the event (4 or 5 hours later), the parking attendant returns to put away the signs and close the lot.  When serving as back-up event facilitator, this person would coordinate setup and cleanup for events, and guide renters in following guidelines for building use and parking.  Up to 8 hours, usually on Saturdays, at an hourly rate starting around $15.  Interested individuals, please send your contact information and work history to Robin Smith, meeting secretary, at secretary@chestnuthillquakers.org.

From Chestnut Hill Friends (& Friends of Friends)

  • From Shelley Costa, Swarthmore Meeting: SEEKING A PAID PART-TIME DRIVER: Greetings from Swarthmore Friends Meeting. My Massachusetts nephew joined our household in Swarthmore one year ago to attend the Crefeld School. He is now beginning his final year (12th grade). Last year I commuted with him while renting office space at CHFM. I was extremely thankful for that arrangement; however, due to a recent loss in my family, I now need others to drive him. A fellow member of Swarthmore Friends (who is a certified Uber driver) can cover the Swarthmore to Chestnut Hill morning leg, but I still need a second driver to cover my nephew's return afternoon leg from Chestnut Hill back to Swarthmore. The responsibility would be to pick my nephew up at Crefeld at 3:30 and drive him the 21.6 miles to Swarthmore. It takes about 40 minutes one-way, mainly on the Blue Route — approx. a 90 min. drive round-trip. Please do be in touch if you can only do 2 or 3 days, as I may be able to get someone else to cover the others. (FYI my nephew is fully vaccinated and needs to pass a temperature check each day before school.) A great many thanks and blessings to all!
  • Katy Hawkins will be teaching a fall course at Bryn Mawr College using poetry, yogic breath and movement practices; and tricks from neurobiological research to help students return to their inner wisdom in these challenging times. If you would like to support this effort by chipping in for yoga mats and props for the class, please contact Katy (hawkinskaty@gmail.com).
  • Jude Brandt is participating in the City to Shore MS Bike Ride fundraiser on September 25th.  You can support her at this site or by searching City to Shore 2021 and donating by entering her name.
  • From Pia St. Onge:  Please consider participating in the Miles for Migraine on Saturday, October 2, along Forbidden Drive.    If you would like to register for one of the events and would like to form a team, email pia.st.onge@gmail.com.  Otherwise, you may wish to sponsor Pia’s walk and donate by clicking here

Zoom Help & Tutorials

A few other notes about Zoom:
  • A small number of Friends are making themselves available for assistance with technical issues before or during Meeting for Worship.  You can email that group at OnlineWorshipSupport@chestnuthillquakers.org; please also use that address to reach out during Meeting for Worship if you have technical trouble. If you have trouble connecting, please check the Zoom system status page before emailing to see if there are any system-level outages.
  • A particularly Quakerly Zoom tip:  Look to the Light!  If you arrange yourself for a Zoom meeting with a window or a lamp in front of you rather than behind you, we'll all be able to enjoy each other's familiar faces.
  • The links above should take you directly to Zoom meetings.  If, for whatever reason, the link does not work, you can open the Zoom app, click join meeting, and enter the meeting ID number.
  • When Meeting for Worship begins, everyone's microphone will be muted by the host.  If you feel moved to give ministry, you can unmute your microphone.  You will be able to hear the ministry of others even while your microphone is muted.  When your ministry concludes, please mute yourself again to reduce background noise.
  • If you call in by phone, you can use *6 to mute and unmute yourself.
