Principal's Message

Dear O.H. Anderson Students and Families,

The first few weeks of school we are spending time building our classroom communities and discussing what we need from each other to be the best we can be at school.  As a school, we have been teaching and reteaching our K-5 expectations in all parts of the school. Tomorrow we will have grade level behavior meetings discussing these common expectations. Your child will bring homework home tomorrow to teach you what it looks like to be respectful, responsible and provide everyone with the right to learn at OHA. Let them take the lead in explaining this to you. You can also create these for home too. Our goal is to teach, reteach, and celebrate students doing the right thing at OHA. I am so proud of the kind, respectful and responsible students at OHA. It is a privilege to work with them daily. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Remember each Friday, we will share our Zephyr Pride.  Please wear Zephyr clothes, Navy, or Gold.

Take care of yourself, your family, and each other.

Choice and Voice at OHA
We know when students have a choice in what they are learning and can add their own voice and creativity they are more engaged and own their learning. This is a learner agency.  I will highlight examples of this at OHA as it is one of our building goals to continue to provide students with choice and voice.

Students brainstorming what we need to do to be the best class family. These are student-generated commitments or expectations.

Students have choices in books that they can and want to read during Independent Reading Time and choices in where they will read.

Each day our students lead the morning announcements to build a school community, communicate important information, and celebrate what we do daily. This year the students will not only share the announcements but add to the script and have highlights based on their interests.
Here is a short video of our morning announcements featuring our OHA student leaders.

Health and Safety

Our School Year Plan Health & Safety Protocols are outlined in this document and posted on our School Year Plan website at www.mahtomedi.k12.mn.us/schoolyearplan under the 2021-22 Health & Safety Protocols Overview tab. Our COVID-19 Dashboard is available at www.mahtomedi.k12.mn.us/dashboard

The Mahtomedi School Board approved the 2021-22 School Year Plan Health & Safety Protocols which will begin on August 30, 2021.

As a reminder, our back-to-school information is available in our 2021-22 Back to School Information & Events Guide. In the guide, you will find all of the school back-to-school guides, open house dates, school supplies, school calendar, and other important information for the school year.

End of the Day Pick Up

Thank you for your patience during pick-up at the end of the day.  The first day of school it took 20 minutes and now we are at 15 minutes to pick up all OHA students. Here are some things that can improve the process and reduce backup on Warner.

  1.  Do not come earlier than 3:10 as the school does not get out until 3:25.

  2. Please put name tents in the dashboard so we can call kids on the megaphone.

  3. Remind students to spread out along the grassy area and watch for you.

  4. You may pick up kids along the sidewalk on both the south and west side of the building.

  5. Please pull all the way ahead to the next car and then pick up your child. We want them to wait until the car is totally stopped for safety.

Chromebooks

All third, fourth, and fifth-grade students at O.H. Anderson Elementary will be issued a Chromebook. The device will stay at school each day unless they need it at home to complete assignments or for learning purposes. If the Chromebook is brought home, please make sure you take good care of the device, keep it charged, and bring it back to school the next day so it is available for learning

The teachers will teach our students how to use their Chromebooks as learning tools, but all families should review the Chromebook Device Guide.

Here are some technology resources for all families.

Classroom Voluntary Donations

Throughout the school year, individual classes or grade groups travel to places of interest or we bring learning experiences to our school. These experiences offer students enriched learning opportunities. You may choose to help defray the cost of such field trips and experiences and/or transportation through a voluntary donation. If you are unable to contribute, your child’s participation shall not be impacted. Please consider contributing. Contributions can be made through our e-store.  Please click here to access the Mahtomedi ePay system. You will need to create a new account to access the system, if not done previously. The Mahtomedi ePay system is the online system where parents can pay for fees, donations, and costs associated with field trips, school supplies and materials, and fines. If additional learning experiences are added, we may ask for an additional voluntary donation during the school year to help cover the costs of the experience.  3rd grade-$25.00, 4th grade- $40.00, 5th grade-$14.60
