Remembering the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks 20 years later


I was in the eighth grade. I was sitting in Mrs. Robinson’s eight grade class watching Channel One news. A hysterical teacher threw the classroom door open and screamed Shannon Murphy’s name. Her grandfather had built his career working in the towers. We were told it was a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. At the time, I had never even heard the word terrorist. I had no concept of what it was. Parents grabbed their children from school, my mother included. While my mother was in tears clinging to me and my sisters, all I could do was complain about missing that day’s volleyball game. She took us to church where we prayed and hugged our neighbors. I had no idea why.

The annual Little Tennessee River Cleanup will take place Saturday, Sept. 11, in Franklin. Volunteer are needed to work a variety of litter zones that day, but on their own schedule following supply pickup throughout the week Sept. 7-10 at Mainspring Conservation Trust’s office on 557 East Main Street in Franklin or from 9-10 a.m. Sept. 11 on Mainspring property across the street from its office. Volunteers can also contact Mainspring’s conservation outreach associate Rachel Newcomb at 828.524.2711, ext. 305, to notify Mainspring of their intent to pick up trash on their own.

Wildlife through the lenses of local photographers will be on display at the Macon County Public Library through the month of September. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
 

“Dillsboro After Five” will take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in downtown Dillsboro. Start with a visit to the Jackson County Farmers Market located in the Innovation Station parking lot.

Nantahala Hiking Club will meet on Friday, Sept. 10,  7 p.m. at the Macon County Public Library. Lamar Marshall, Research Director and Historical Graphics Designer for Southeast Heritage, is the speaker. Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter Telephone Support Group for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia is designed to provide caregivers opportunities for sharing, education, and support through a telephone conference. Holly Springs Baptist Church, 2nd Mile Ministry is open 10 to Noon Mondays providing a food pantry, children's clothes and financial aid (rent and utilities) for families and seniors in need. 

Friends of the Greenway  FROG Quarters is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m.,  at 573 E. Main in Franklin. Stop by for coffee or a soft drink and a snack, use our free internet.  You can also reserve the shelters for your events there.

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.

Uptown Gallery on Main Street new hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Fridays for drive up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.

Macon County Public Health is currently vaccinating those eligible under Groups 4. People in Group 4  are those who have a medical condition that puts them at higher risk of serious illness and people who live in certain congregate settings are eligible for vaccination. The rest of Group 4, which includes all other essential workers and all adults will become eligible April 7. Individuals that want to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, must call Macon County’s Vaccine Call Center at (828)524-1500 to register and schedule an appointment. The Call Center is open Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All Saints Episcopal Church, Franklin  Services are held Rite I, 8 a.m. without music and Rite II,  10:15 a.m. with music, every Sunday. First and third Sundays at St. Agnes Chapel, 66 Church St. and second and fourth Sundays at St. Cyprian’s Chapel, 216 Roller Mill Rd.
