SEPTEMBER 2021

NEWSLETTER

Dear <<First Name>>,

Heritage Day is on the horizon in September, and we are mindful not only of the wonderful, diverse society we live in, in South Africa, but also of how important diversity and inclusion is in our workplaces - for the equal benefit of all South Africans, as well as for the sake of well-rounded, representative organisations that benefit from a variety of perspectives, greater innovation, faster problem solving and better decision making. The EAPA-SA Board wishes you all an enjoyable and safe Heritage Day.

This month we bring you an article that examines executive coaching and its future as a service offering within EAP. We also take a look at how to assist employees in the aftermath of trauma.

We take a dive into understanding more about how to reduce unconscious bias in the workplace and we ask the question in an article titled, “Working from Anywhere - is South Africa ready?”

As always we would love to hear from you and welcome your input. Feel free to get in touch with us with feedback and article ideas.  We are always keen for you to share comments on our newsletter articles - tell us what you enjoy most and what topics you would like to read more about in your EAPA-SA newsletter.

Executive Coaching – The Future of EAPs?

When attending to employees with behavioural or performance issues, some EAP programmes may use the terms counselling and coaching interchangeably. However, by definition, coaching differs from counselling in that it is not a remedial service, and using the term coaching to describe a service that is primarily aimed at correcting a problem behaviour misrepresents true coaching. In today’s world of work, senior management and executives see coaching as a valuable perk that will hone skills that they will take with them into their future career and expect their employer to provide them with coaching. This represents an excellent opportunity for EAPs. >>>

Assisting Employees in the Aftermath of Trauma

Across the globe, people are living through sustained trauma on a scale not seen in over 70 years – since the end of World War 2. In South Africa, the colossal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic along with a lasting negative effect of recent civil unrest have left individuals, communities and businesses in a state of shock. With the impact of these recurring and complex traumas, it is important for organisations to consider incorporating a trauma-informed approach to routinely help their workers feel safe and supported as well as assisting their employees overcome the aftermath of a particular trauma when the need arises. >>>

How to Reduce Unconscious Bias in the Workplace

Unconscious bias in the workplace is a commonplace occurrence that impacts one person’s opinion of another, based on facts or experiences from their past. These biases can negatively affect an organisation in several ways: during the hiring process when HR or managers are considering different candidates; when a leader or manager treats certain employees differently than their peers; or when one worker makes assumptions about another and reacts accordingly. >>>

Working From Anywhere – Is South Africa Ready?

Even before the pandemic, working from home was not a new concept. However, before COVID-19, many South African organisations treated it more as an occasional practice or perk, granted to specific employees. While first world countries have been implementing remote work over the previous decade or two, South Africa lagged behind this steadily growing trend. But, since mandated lockdowns started in March 2020, our work-from-home/work anywhere statistics have changed dramatically. >>>
