First, From the Heart
Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11. What a sad and horrible day it was. To long-time New Yorkers like me, the death and destruction were unimaginable. My office on lower Fifth Avenue had a clear line of sight to the first burning tower. Once the second plane hit, we knew we were under attack. No one knew what the next minute, hour, day, or year would bring. Yet the local and worldwide response was an outpouring of heartfelt compassion.
The world continues to challenge us, minute by minute. Yesterday I was privileged to collaborate with an incredible group of emerging leaders. During the round of introductions, one young man shared that he had just lost a very close loved one. His grief and sadness were palpable. After a brief pause, he then talked about choosing to seek moments of joy. That it was his “responsibility to find more joy.” How wise and true.
Our choices in every moment define us and the way our world emerges. Let’s continue to grow our capacity to simultaneously hold grief and joy, suffering and love, hardship and ease. As we share our collective compassion, know that it is making a difference. I thank you for being on your compassionate journey, courageously doing your part, and contributing through your leadership and life. Peace.

We Are Not Alone
Our drive to achieve and accumulate comes from a place of wanting to create safety. It also comes with a terrible cost. The more we succeed at setting ourselves apart, the lonelier it becomes. The good news is that we are also wired to care for each other. Recognizing our interconnectedness supports us in leading in order to thrive individually, in communities, and in organizations. Practice Matters
Communing
Alone. Many of us relish time for ourselves to tune inward. The quiet inside space that nurtures, restores, and fuels our creative juices. We sit in our aloneness, and simultaneously sense our connection to all there is. This place at the intersection of our inner and outer selves is a rich resource for our wellbeing. Both alone and connected – whole.
Yet sometimes we feel alone and isolated. Or maybe we are in the physical presence of others and suffer from feeling apart or not belonging. Separate. Unsupported. Loneliness can literally be the death of us. Our basic human instincts drive us to overcome the profound lack of emotional or energetic connection. Sadly, sometimes we lose our capacity to connect and then we withdraw and wither.
Especially in these times, we need the support of our fellow humans – those with whom we resonate and who offer us a safe connection and a sense of belonging. A community that is like-minded, understanding, and aligned with our deepest values and desires. When the old structures are broken or no longer serve you, find new communities or create your own. Meaningful relationships are the lifeblood that will enable us to build the next chapter of our emerging world. Reach out, with love and compassion for all.
When can we practice? Always!
