Technology Policy Fellowship, Open Philanthropy
Open Philanthropy is seeking applicants for a US policy fellowship program focused on high-priority emerging technologies, especially AI and biotechnology. Selected applicants will receive policy-focused training and mentorship and be supported in matching with a host organization for a full-time, fully-funded fellowship based in the Washington, DC area. Potential host organizations include executive branch offices, Congressional offices, and think tank programs.

Fellowship placements are expected to begin in early or mid-2022 and to last 6 or 12 months (depending on the fellowship category), with potential renewal for a second term. Fellowship opportunities are available for both entry-level and mid-career applicants, and for people both with and without prior policy experience.

2022 Science Policy Fellowship, Institute for Defense Analyses

Fellows will work with teams of researchers to support a wide variety of S&T policy-related tasks. Duties may include conducting survey-based and interview-based research, database development, use of data visualization tools, use of statistical techniques, and other qualitative and quantitative methods to perform project-driven policy analysis. Fellows will have an opportunity to work on one independent research project that will contribute to the scientific, technical, or policy literature. Over the course of the two-year program, experiences will include:

  • Participation in analyses that support tasking from Federal Government policymakers
  • Interaction with OSTP and other Federal science agency personnel
  • Involvement in workshops and discussions on relevant topics
  • Mentorship from members of the STPI research staff
  • Training on specific analytical methods and tools
  • Attendance and presentation at select professional society meetings

2022 Data Science Fellowship, Institute for Defense Analyses

The IDA Data Science Fellowship provides recent graduates a unique opportunity to develop and apply data science skills to important issues in national security.  Data Science Fellows will investigate the ways machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistics, and big data methodologies contribute to national security and gain experience developing advanced data science tools They will use their critical thinking and analytic skills to work on challenging real-world national security issues.  In a collaborative team environment, Fellows perform data manipulation and statistical, econometric, predictive, descriptive, and other quantitative analyses to answer national security-related research questions. Fellows should expect to learn while creatively contributing to interdisciplinary project teams.

Fellows will have an opportunity to work research questions in areas such as:

  • Appraisal of current DoD investments in a broad range of areas: from human factors to autonomous systems, from materials science to nuclear weapons effects, from social behaviors to quantum computing;
  • Analyze and research questions on DoD personnel, military readiness and efficacy, and organizational efficiency topics.
  • Assessment of federal agency information and computing architectures that support data science applications (i.e., large, distributed data sets and computational assets);
  • Application of data exploration, text analytics, forecasting, statistical inference, simulation to areas of military personnel, manpower, and acquisition of DOD weapon systems.

Over the course of the three-year program, fellowship experiences will include:

Harvard Strategic Data Project Fellow, Harvard Strategic Data Project
The Strategic Data Project (SDP) is an initiative of the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University. The SDP Fellowship program helps school system leaders use data and evidence in strategic decision-making to improve public education. By placing Fellows in school systems and education organizations across the United States, SDP provides a unique entry point for passionate quantitative researchers and data strategists who want to make a difference.

Technical Fellow, Schmidt Futures (NYC)
Many of the most pressing global policy challenges today have technical problems at their core (e.g., tech competition with China, AI infrastructure investment, global internet standards, and algorithmic fairness). Yet the top policy research groups and think tanks driving new policy ideas lack technical expertise on staff or within their networks. Solving these challenges requires technical insight, which can uniquely be produced by exceptional technical talent. We are seeking “bilingual Computer Science + policy” experts to help build a next-generation technical strategy group from the ground up. This group aims to develop cutting edge knowledge on tech strategy questions to help shape decision making for policymakers, philanthropists, and other relevant investors.

Health/Information Vulnerability Map, Dr. Seema Yasmin, Stanford Health Communication Initiative
Dr. Seema Yasmin, who directs the Stanford Health Communication Initiative, is leading a research project on health and information equity.  They are looking for additional data scientists to help with the project.  It is a great opportunity for students to apply data science to an important issue in healthcare. This project involves merging and analyzing deserts on news deserts and medical deserts and using GIS to create a map of the U.S. that shows the possible coexistence of these regions, who lives in these "double deserts," and investigating the impact of the decimation of local news on public health.
Roles: GIS mapping, analysis of federal datasets on health deserts and news desert datasets.
