New: Joint Reapportionment Public Comments

The General Assembly is excited to announce a new joint public comment portal that has been designed to allow for maximum input by citizens during the Redistricting process. This portal, which is open now and will be utilized throughout the special session, allows citizens to submit comments to the House Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Committee and the Senate Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee. These comments are automatically uploaded to the General Assembly’s website and can be viewed by legislators, staff, and the public. This new and improved feature will give citizens from all parts of our state the ability to see what their fellow Georgians have to say regarding reapportionment and redistricting.

Any comments submitted previously during the committee meetings held this summer have already been uploaded to the new portal.

Re-Cap of Recent Events in our Community and at our Capitol

On July 23, U. S. Secretary of Education Cardona visited Kelley Lake Elementary School to kick off the school year and highlight the improved ventilation systems funded by the American Rescue Plan.  I was excited to bring two education non-profit leaders, Ella Davis of SDIAE, in the yellow jacket, and Amy Sharmer of Science for Georgia and for them to meet our Congresswoman, Nikema Williams.  And Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett and I were glad for Senator Ossoff to recognize the importance of Kelley Lake!  I also loved meeting Kelley Lake art teacher Henry Blackmon, who painted this portrait of Secretary Cardona!
On July 31 I was excited to join DeKalb County School Board Chair Vicky Turner, and board members Dijon DaCosta and Diedre Pierce and others at the Back-to-School Drive-Thru!

Fighting for our Freedom to Vote --  Days of Action at our Capitol

In early August I joined over 40 Georgia legislator and 150 other state legislators to participate in rallies and marches in our nation's Capitol for the Senate to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.  There were many highlights, but two of them were participating in a Moral Monday March led by Rev. William Barber with my colleagues Rep Josh McLaurin,  Rep Rhonda Taylor and activist Cindy Battles  and having  heartfelt conversation with the Rev. Jesse Jackson about  the impact of his children's book Tessie on me  outside the White House.
On August 10 I participated in Science for Georgia's Education and Workforce Roundtable.  I am particularly interested in working on legislation to improve our literacy rates in Georgia.
On August 11 I was excited to attend the Ribbon Cutting and Open House for the MedCura Health Center (formerly Oakhurst Medical Centers) on Candler Road, in the heart of our community.  It was so wonderful to be with Pastor William Flippen of Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church in person - he gave the invocation - he is the Chair of the DeKalb Juvenile Justice Council and I love working with him.  And of course it is always an honor to be with Congressman Hank Johnson who was our key speaker.  This state of the art beautiful community health center is a welcome and much-needed high quality health care facility in the heart of Southeast DeKalb!
On August 19, as a member of the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee, I attended the groundbreaking for the new Georgia Public Safety Building, five and half miles down Moreland Avenue, off United Avenue.    The current DPS headquarters is 64 years old and outdated.  I learned that they have been trucking in drinking water for the past 20 years!  The new facility will be modern and incorporate cutting edge technology that will serve DPS for generations to come.
Thank you for reading this through.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend.  Please stay safe and healthy out there!  Please let me know if I can be of service to you.
