Monday 13th September 2021

Kia ora Bradford Whānau,

Wow - it has been a whole month since our last newsletter and so much has happened!  It was with delight we witnessed the quick settling of akonga who were happy to be back reconnecting with their school family.  A tremendous thank you to Brooke and Ange from STAND who rescheduled their regular Monday to come into school last Thursday to touch base and support those tamariki who were a little anxious.

This week's newsletter contains a number of both important updates to previously shared information and some new information.   I do acknowledge there has been information overload during the lockdown period as agencies have tried to keep communities safe.  Thus, I will not be sharing any learning this week but have opted to group key information into blocks to aid your 'print digestion.'  Next week you can expect a return to the usual format.

Kia mau menemene - keep smiling,

Ka Ora, Ka Ako Healthy Lunches in School's Programme
starts one week from today on MONDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER

You will be aware that the Government has been rolling out free lunches to kura across the country for some time.  It's now our turn to join the programme.  We know that although we are more fortunate than many countries in the World, most individuals / families can experience financial hardship at some time during their lives - often for reasons beyond their control.  This is why the initiative is a free lunch provision for every child based on the school roll numbers.

There is no option for the schools to get less than their roll for the following reasons:  Some families may need a bit of help at the moment, others may not. This is a discreet way to provide that support, a little bit like a school uniform.  We are aware that some caregivers would prefer to send their own packed lunch to school with their child, and this is no problem at all.  It may be that your child doesn't like certain foods provided only on some days and again that is fine.  Teachers will be monitoring eating within their classroom and Weetbix and fruit will also be available if on a certain day your child has nothing else and doesn't like the lunch provided.  Please talk with your child's teacher if you wish to clarify any details about your child's lunch.
Please rest assured we can find homes for extras within our school and community families if this is the case and food will not be going to waste.

We were very lucky to be able to have a little bit of choice with our local Subway coming to the party beyond the standard scope of the initiative.  This has included more than one flavour selection and the agreement to provide a piece of fruit to accompany the 6" option.  Subway is provided on Monday and Friday each week.

Kaan's are our other supplier and they will be providing lunches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Beyond allergies and cultural dietary requirements theses lunches are not able to be customised.  However, they are made up of a number of items so children will have other components if they don't like a particular item in their lunch.  Kaan's menu runs for a full term.  In the box below is what we can expect for the last two weeks of Term 3 before it will change for Term 4.  I will share the new menu for Term 4 with you when it has been approved by the Ministry of Education as meeting their Healthy Lunch criteria.

TEACHER ONLY DAY TERM 4

Please be advised that Bradford School will be closed to students on Friday 29th October to allow staff to partake in an exciting professional learning opportunity.  I shall share more details with you closer to the time but this is the second Friday of Term 4, which is the Friday at the end of the week containing Labour Weekend on the Monday.  An opportunity for families to have two long weekends in a row if you'd like to book it in your calendar now.
