Travel Signatures
No travel signatures are given in the ISO office--
You are required to request a new form on iMIT

For new students, the ISO will be able to provide a travel validation signature for your Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 only after the beginning of the Fall semester, confirming your full-time enrollment and after your enrollment has been reported to SEVIS by the ISO. Travel signatures for new students can begin to be requested on iMIT as of September 15, 2021.

For all students, instructions on how to request a new Form I-20/Form DS-2019 with travel validation signature, and guidance on documents to carry when traveling, is available on the ISO “Visas and Travel” webpage.

In general, a travel signature is valid for one year, and students must have one if they are returning to the US after traveling abroad.
*Exception: If you are traveling to Canada, Mexico, or the adjacent Caribbean islands, we recommend obtaining a signature within the last 6 months.

Processing time for new Form I-20/Form DS-2019 is within 10 business days of a completed submission in iMIT.

Applying for Social Security Number (SSN)

New students who began in-person during Fall 2021 can request SSN letter in iMIT only starting Wednesday, Sept 15

Students who will be working in the U.S. will be able to apply for a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). The process has been impacted by COVID-19 and the continued staff limitations and in-person submission at the Social Security Administration Office in Cambridge. We greatly appreciate all of the efforts the SSA is doing to support our international students’ SSN applications. Please read the full details of eligibility and how to apply for an SSN is available on the ISO website: https://iso.mit.edu/employment/social-security-number-ssn/

IMPORTANT NOTE: New students will be eligible to apply for an SSN only after they are officially enrolled for their Fall 2021 coursework at MIT and their registration for the Fall semester is submitted by the ISO to SEVIS. Therefore, applications could be submitted beginning as of September 15.

Beware of Scams
Read more on our website:
https://iso.mit.edu/life-at-mit/campus-safety/scams-and-fraud/

We cannot stress this enough. PLEASE be careful if you receive a phone call, email, text message or in-person visit from someone claiming to be a U.S. government official or law enforcement. Unfortunately, MIT International Students are victims of scams and fraud every semester. So what should you do?

  • First, do NOT provide any information about yourself, for identity-protection purposes.
  • Second, remain calm and ask the person for as many details as possible. For example, their name, government ID number or badge number, their phone number, what branch of the government they work for, and the reason why they are contacting you. Tell them you are happy to get back to them after you speak to the ISO.
  • Third, contact the ISO immediately, by phone, email, or in person. We can help you determine if the official is legitimate or if it's a scam. If the official is legitimate, we can help you navigate the process.

SOME: Acronym for self-care
Sleep, Outside, Mindfulness, Exercise

Instead of an “all-or-nothing” approach to self-care, you can choose SOMEthing from the list and do SOME of it today. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to work for you. SOME activities signal to your body and mind that you are listening to, appreciating, and taking care of yourself.

S is for Sleep: Sleep experts recommend creating a bedtime routine that allows the body and brain to slow down and prepare for sleep. Bedtime Unwind is a 13-minute routine which includes three simple stretches to relax before bed - or anytime you could use a mind-body break.
Check out Bedtime Unwind here.

O is for Outdoors: An outdoor walk can boost creativity and focus. A study has found that both walking and being outside could lead to more creative thinking. While the association is not well understood, it is an easy-to-implement strategy.

M is for Mindfulness: Mindfulness practice: You have to eat anyway - might as well enjoy it mindfully! To start, simply look away from any technology and look directly at your food for a moment. Notice color and texture. Next, take in aroma. Finally, take one mindful bite and chew slowly and mindfully. Pay extra attention to the genius of your tongue.

E is for Exercise: You've probably heard this one a lot, but let this be another sign for you to workout while watching TV. You can do push-ups, crunches, jumping jacks, and squats while focusing on your show. Want an extra nudge? Bring your jump rope, dumbbells, resistance bands, or any other fitness tools near your TV to help remind you to use them.
