Senior Center Update
Staying Safe in September

The Senior Center remains open, although we have instituted new guidelines in order to keep our members safe and healthy. We currently ask that all participants wear masks when indoors. Masks remain optional for outdoor programming. All meals are available to take home and we continue to offer at home options for participation. We look forward to continuing to serve you and offering valuable, safe programming for all. We greatly appreciate your cooperation so that we can continue in person activities.

September is Falls Prevention Month. The Ohio Department of Aging is challenging Ohioans to take “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls.” Visit their website here and help them reach their goal. If 4,000 Ohioans walk 1 mile each we will reach 10 million steps! Join the Senior Center walking group Wednesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. and help contribute to this goal.

World Gorilla Day
September 24 is World Gorilla Day. As you may remember, John Apsinall founded the Aspinall Foundation in the 1970s with the goal of reintroducing gorillas bred in captivity into the wild. His son, Damian, now leads the foundation. They have released 8 black rhinos, 135 primates, 11 European bison, and over 70 western lowland gorillas back into the wild. Enjoy a heartwarming video of Damian’s daughter, Tansy, being reunited with gorillas from her childhood here. Gorillas are an endangered species and the powerful mountain gorilla is now critically endangered with only 880 remaining in the world. Help spread the word for World Gorilla Day by visiting the Apsinall Foundation here for education, crafting ideas and more.

Book Club

Book Club discussion will take place on Friday, September 17 at 1:00 p.m. in the Senior Center Atrium. For September’s Book Club, we are reading The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams. Set during the height of the women’s suffrage movement and with the Great War looming, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of a history written by men. Inspired by actual events, author Pip Williams has delved into the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary to tell this highly original story. The Dictionary of Lost Words is a delightful, lyrical and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words and the power of language to shape the world. This book will be available for scheduled pick up for participants who register for September’s Book Club. Sponsored by O’Neill Healthcare.
