Welcome to the September 2021 HEICCAM newsletter!

This newsletter presents an update on the HEICCAM network activities and announcements, upcoming events, funding opportunities, and new developments in the area of clean air research.

Network Updates and Announcements

HEICCAM Annual Assembly, Save the date: 25-26 October 2021, Online

The HEICCAM annual assembly is scheduled for 25-26 October 2021. Our 2021 annual assembly will bring together multi-disciplinary senior and early-career researchers, stakeholders, and industry partners to discuss challenges associated with indoor and outdoor air quality under climate change mitigation. The assembly will be an online event and will be run for two days. On Day 1, the discussion will be centered around key research questions, knowledge gaps and priorities of the HEICCAM project, and networking across project members and partners. Day 2 will focus on HEICCAM science working groups’ objectives, ongoing research activities and plans for future research under HEICCAM. Specific details on the assembly agenda and schedule will be available shortly. 

Upcoming Events

Breathing City Event on Metrics for Indoor and Outdoor Air Quality, 22 September 2021, 09:30 - 13:00 BST, Online

Our partner Clean Air SPF network, Breathing City, is hosting an online workshop to identify how mathematical models are used currently by building stakeholders, to explore stakeholder needs in terms of ventilation and air quality, to explore reality versus modelling and to identify opportunities from emerging technologies. This half-day event will showcase the latest research and strategies associated with air quality metrics. This event is free to attend and is suitable for researchers, public health practitioners and professionals with an interest in air quality. South-East Asia Regional Consultations on Climate Change and Health by WHO, 5 October 2021, Online

Beginning in April 2021, the WHO-Civil Society Working Group on Climate and Health has hosted a series of six Regional Consultations. The aims of these consultations are to solicit and elevate health sector recommendations on climate action; strengthen linkages between the country, regional and global initiatives on climate change and health; highlight leadership and innovation within each region. The South-East Asian Regional Consultation is scheduled for 5th October 2021. It will be a 5.5-hour meeting to allow for consultative interaction in two major breakout sessions, as well as the sharing of case studies and participation in workshops. Opportunities and Funding

Sustainable Urban Systems and Infrastructure NetworkPlus’ funding opportunity, Call opens on 28 Sept. 2021

EPSRC, NERC and AHRC will shortly be inviting applications to the Sustainable Urban Systems and Infrastructure NetworkPlus funding opportunity. Invited proposals would address how Infrastructure, sustainable Urban Systems and Cities fit in with the UK Government’s Build Back Better Plan and UK Net-Zero Plan. Funding would be provided to support 3 networks in 3 key strands:

  1. Green Infrastructure development linked to Blue/ Brown/ Grey Infrastructure

  2. Low Carbon Connected Digital Infrastructure with considerations between urban and rural environments 

  1. Sustainable Urban Systems, transitioning urban systems to become resilient and adaptable across natural systems and infrastructure

Opportunities for Early-Career Researchers

Vacancy for Environmental Data Scientist Net Zero Building Design (KTP Associate), Deadline: 17 October 2021

An exciting opportunity has become available to work on a 30-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between the University of Exeter and CIBSE. The KTP will deliver and embed a new generation of predictive weather datasets, based on UKCP18 data, for the design of low carbon and climate change-resilient buildings. The successful candidate will be employed by the University of Exeter and will be based at CIBSE’s premises in Balham, South London. More details provided are provided here.

Training course on Ammonia as an Air Quality Pollutant by UKCEH, 3 & 4 November 2021, Online 

This online course over two half days is an introduction to ammonia as an air pollutant and its role in air quality impacts. The course will cover an overview of the sources and effects of ammonia pollution, air quality policies and legislation targeted at reducing emissions and impacts of ammonia. The course will also explain how ammonia is measured and how to link concentrations to effects in local assessments. Course details, fees and schedule are provided on the UKCEH website
