17th Sunday after Pentecost
Today we hear James warn against selfish ambition, while the disciples quarrel over which one of them is the greatest. Jesus tells them the way to be great is to serve. Then, to make it concrete, he puts in front of them a flesh-and-blood child. We are called to welcome the children God puts in front of us, to make room for them in daily interaction, and to give them a place of honor in the assembly.

New Bishops installed in the ELCA

This past weekend, the ELCA welcomed two bishops with historic installations.

The Rev. Megan Rohrer (they/them) was installed on Saturday, September 11, at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco as Bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod. Bishop Rohrer makes history as the first openly transgender bishop elected to serve in a mainline Christian denomination. Read more about their installation and story here.

The Rev. Brenda Bos (she/her) was also installed on Sunday, September 12, at Angelica Lutheran Church in Los Angeles as Bishop of the Southwest California Synod. Bishop Bos is the first openly lesbian pastor to be elected bishop in the ELCA, following her predecessor, the Rev. Guy Erwin, the first openly LGBTQIA+ bishop in the ELCA (now president of United Lutheran Seminary in Pennsylvania). Read an interview with Bishop Bos here.

Both Bishops Rohrer and Bos are members of Proclaim, a professional organization for publicly identified LGBTQIA+ rostered ministers and seminarians in the Lutheran church, of which Pastor Josh is also a member. Read more about ELM and Proclaim here.

AROUND THE GLOBE
Help Our Afghan Allies - Click here to make a gift to Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS). When our new Afghan neighbors arrive in the United States, many have little more than the clothes on their backs. Your gift to Neighbors in Need: Afghan Allies helps provide essential support for newly arrived families, including emergency medical care, temporary housing, financial support for basic necessities, and more.

Disaster Response - Support the work of Lutheran Disaster Response, a ministry of the ELCA, by making a gift to Hurricane Ida relief efforts or earthquake relief in Haiti.

IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
The Veterans Closet in North Chicago is collecting pots and pans for the people it serves. You can drop them off at church, or contact Rita Bergquist to arrange an alternative pick up option.

Donations for the Northfield Township Food Pantry can also be dropped off at the church at any time. Access a list of current needs here. Once a month, we will take the donations to the food pantry.
