1.  Atlanta's newest park

Some good news you may have missed in the past few weeks: Atlanta's Westside Park is now open to the public.

Formerly the Bellwood Quarry, the 280-acre park is one of Atlanta's largest green spaces. Our colleague Amy Wenk got some early pictures which you can see here. If you want to visit, put 1600 Johnson Rd, SW into your GPS to get to the parking lot.

2. 'Scuse me, officer?

Atlanta Senior Life public safety columnist Steve Rose is a retired Sandy Springs police officer. His latest column from our September issue takes a look at understanding how cops talk.

Rose writes: "I recently watched an episode of 'T.J. Hooker,' a TV cop show from the 1980s. The show was not produced as a comedy, but it was one of the funniest things I’ve watched in weeks. Nothing in that show was accurate, and I found myself critiquing it as if I were writing a review.

Maybe I’ll do that in a later column. This episode did, however, get me thinking about how police agencies communicate and how they project that language to the public, usually via the media.

Most of you probably get police information from media sources. After Sept. 11, 2001, most police departments revamped internal communication standards, moving from signals to 'plain talk.'"

3. The evolution of Sandy Springs dining

Our colleague Amy Wenk explores how Sandy Springs' dining scene has evolved in the past three decades. She traces the change to the influence of trailblazing restaurateur Bruce Alterman.

Wenk writes, "Chef Todd Ginsberg and his partners had offers to expand their intown deli to the suburbs.

They looked at Avalon in Alpharetta and a food hall project in Marietta. Instead, they selected Sandy Springs for a new location of The General Muir. The New York-inspired Jewish deli opened this January at City Springs.

'We got to really thinking about … Sandy Springs, how it changed and evolved,' Ginsberg said. 'We thought that there would be an opportunity for a good deli up there, especially considering there are five synagogues within a couple of miles.'"
