A Note from the Head of School
Today at Royal Palm Academy, our school community honored the memory of those who lost their lives twenty years ago on September 11, 2001. We gathered in prayer, song, and celebration of the courageous men and women who serve and protect our nation as firefighters, police officers, military service members, and medical first responders. It was a beautiful and patriotic ceremony that commemorated those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
In many ways, our memory of 9/11 can be filled with powerful emotions and confusion. The loss of so many innocent lives and the senseless attacks on our country felt incomprehensible. As a Naval Officer who was serving overseas when these terrible events unfolded, we immediately understood that we were at war with an enemy who wanted to destroy us.

But as Christians, we are called to love our enemies, and pray for those who persecute us. The gospel reading for Thursday reminded us of this:

"Jesus said to his disciples:
“To you who hear I say, love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you,
pray for those who mistreat you."
                            -Luke 6:27-28

This is the radical challenge of Christ: to forgive even when the seemingly unforgiveable happens. Bishop Barron reflected that when we love our enemies and those who persecute us, we confuse and confound them by taking away the very energy that feeds their hatred. Our response of love has the simultaneous impact of disarming our enemy and strengthening us with grace and virtue.

And in many ways, this was the unifying blessing that came from 9/11. We as a nation felt a unifying solidarity and love of neighbor. We set aside our differences and came together in prayer, strength, and resolve. We were reminded of the tremendous gratitude and love we feel for our beautiful country, our appreciation for selfless and courageous first responders, and pride in the valiant courage of ordinary Americans.

Today we prayed that God might remind us that we have more in common with each other than we have differences. We are called to love our neighbors, and to pray for those with whom we disagree. May God continue to bless and protect our families, police officers, firefighters, military service members, doctors, nurses, first responders, Royal Palm Academy, and our beloved United States of America.

Semper Altius!

Sincerely,
Michael J. Bussman
