AUGUST/ SEPTEMBER CLUB NEWSLETTER

MEET OUR YOUTH COACHES

JEANNIE FREIS
Where are you from? New Jersey originally; moved to Colorado in 2000
What are your interests? Running, dance, strength training, running after my 2 kids and Siberian Husky
Running experience? I started running after my kids were born and a friend gave me her hand me down jog stroller. I run mostly for fun and fitness, and race sometimes to challenge myself and because I enjoy the local community. I've trained with Angelina Ramos, Ric Rojas, and Mark Plaatjes' run groups, and virtually with Nick and Sierra Willis' boot camps. I've raced every distance from 100m up to half marathons, and my favorite is track middle distance.
Why do you want to coach kids? Because it's really fun and I love being around other runners!
What are you looking forward to as a coach of TEAM Boulder? Having fun, building a community through health and fitness, and encouraging greater enjoyment of the sports (and sports in general).
COLEEN MCGRATH
Where are you from? I was born and raised in California, spent the last 30 years in San Diego going to college, getting married and raising my kids. We moved to Boulder 2 years ago for my husbands job.
What are your interests? I love to read, run, hike, bike, camp and most anything outside. I also really love board games.
Running experience? I have been running since elementary school (but didn’t always love it), my parents were runners and took us on vacations to watch them run marathons. I really fell in love in my 20’s and have shared this love by coaching adults, middle school and volunteering at elementary school running club. I love to run long distance, on a trail or a half marathon.
Why do you want to coach kids? I want to coach kids because I want to share my love of running with my experience as an elementary school teacher and coach.
What are you looking forward to as a coach of TEAM Boulder? I am hoping to inspire and encourage kids of all ages on TEAM Boulder to enjoy running and celebrate every victory.
MC DORBECKER
Where are you from? San Diego, California. I've been in Colorado for almost 4 years now.
What are your interests? Running, hiking, playing with my husky (Apollo), dancing.
Running experience? I've been running for most of my life! I'd go on runs with my dad as a kid and spent recess running laps around the playground field. Ran cross-country and track in high school, then joined the club team for part of college until an injury sidelined me. Took a big break with minimal running and then got back into it more seriously about two years ago. I've always been a long distance runner so pretty much anything 10K and longer, although I love track workouts.
Why do you want to coach kids? Coaching sounds like a fun new experience and I love the idea of introducing young kids to a sport that I love and getting them excited about it!
What are you looking forward to as a coach of TEAM Boulder? I'm looking forward to contributing directly to our community and being more involved with an organization that has provided such great experiences for me as a participant.

3. Where are you originally from? Atlanta, GA
4. Occupation? Clinical Research Assistant at CU Boulder and Exercise Physiology Graduate Student.

9. Why did you join T.E.A.M Boulder? My favorite way to get to know people in a new town is joining a run club. T.E.A.M. * Recently I sent out a email to all club members to seek donations for Hannah, who will be running the New York City Marathon on November 7th in honor of, and raising money for Girls on the Run NYC. (https://www.gotrnyc.org). Please read from her below:

On November 7th, I am running the New York City Marathon as a SoleMate fundraising for Girls on the Run NYC!

Both as a young girl and as an adult, physical activity has been a rock in my personal life and empowered me to boldly pursue my dreams. After “retiring” from my role as an NCAA swimmer, I struggled to find the same mental peace it had provided. Then, I began to run and discovered the welcoming running community which has helped me through a tumultuous couple of years. During this time, I had the opportunity to work with Girls on the Run NYC as a Zankel Fellow at Teachers College, Columbia University, and I was able to see first-hand the incredible impact of the program and appreciate the way it aligns with my own values. Girls on the Run embodies the belief that every girl should be able to live a joyful, healthy, and confident life, and they realize this vision through lessons that emphasize connection and build confidence. To celebrate my own journey and support the healthy development of girls across New York City, I have decided to dedicate my first marathon race to Girls on the Run NYC.

If you are not familiar with Girls on the Run, please let me share a little bit about it with you now. Dedicated to a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential, Girls on the Run has impacted the lives of millions of girls across the country through a fun and effective after school program designed to enhance girls’ social, emotional, and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experience. If there is one thing I want to emphasize to you it is that Girls on the Run is for every girl. Physical activity—including running and strength & conditioning—is woven into lessons but the program is accessible to all girls regardless of athletic ability or fitness level.

Why do I need your help? Well, in order to reach all girls and ensure that Girls on the Run is accessible to any girl who wishes to participate, my goal is to raise $5,000 so that more girls across New York City can participate. Will you consider making a donation? Every dollar makes a big difference and I can only reach my goal with your support! You can give online
