_______________________________________________________________________________ Does Legislation Matter: An opinion piece by Kathy Ponce
Does Legislation in Austin matter? Yes it does but really only if it is meaningful legislation.
So many times I will listen to conversations and hear people say "we need a bill for that" or "we need a bill or a law for this". Do we really?
The reason I ask is because with more legislation comes a loss of freedom. One of the reasons so many people move to Texas is because it truly is a free state where much of the control is local. Maybe to many that seems far-fetched as we fight for our Legislative Priorities in Austin or we make phone calls and try to get bills that we care about passed in Austin. But as someone who lived in a blue state with a full time legislature, Bad bills were being passed weekly and sometimes daily. Because what is a full time legislature to do with their time but pass bills. More restrictions and requirements on your life.
So as September 1st has arrived and new bills/laws have been implemented into Texas (over 600 by the way) we must always seek good legislation to be passed. Legislation should always be looked at in two ways. Does this help Texas and its people if we have a Republican Governor? We must ask how this bill will affect the people of Texas if we were to have a Democrat Governor.
So let us always strive to pass legislation that will make Texas better but never let us strive to pass so many bills and so many laws that Texas loses the freedom that we cherish so much.
All politics local. These are some of the bills that will affect your life.
Dare I say those words in Ellis County...again. Yet here with are with another match up. We have to keep pushing our friends, neighbors, and family living here in Ellis County to continue to bring the vote out for this Special Election Run Off. It was almost comical at my Wednesday night church gathering when I was asked the proverbial question, "who won?" I laughed. In a room full of people under the age of 35, though, I must say I was impressed they were still engaged. Many, including myself, had predicted a run-off. The voter fatigue is REAL! I believe a saving grace is there is guaranteed no Special Election after this one. Or maybe I'm wrong? Maybe in a crazy twist of ironic fate, this universe will destine Ellis County to cycles and cycles of Special Elections with a run-off every time (insert menacing laugh). Props to our County, though, and props to everyone who has involved themselves for any candidate. When we involve ourselves, it has a ripple effect and we involve people who care about as and we them. In some way, our passion becomes important to them, and they want to be involved in the voting process. They want to be involved in the decision making. We must continue to push forward through this run off so we are able to focus on midterms, which I'm POSITIVE will be no cake walk.

Analysis of the results from last week's TX HD 10 race presents good news along with some disappointing facts. Ellis County voters cast 88% of their votes for the five Republican candidates on the ballot. With 76% of the votes going to the top two candidates and both being Republicans it is great to see we are "Keeping Ellis County Red". Unfortunately, not all of the news is good. Ellis county has over 122,000 registered voters but less than 9% voted in this election. This means that fewer than 11,000 voters bothered to vote. The question we have to ask ourselves is why?
This low voter turnout could be the result of apathy or it could be lack of information. Were the residents of Ellis County aware that there was an election underway? Did they know when and where to vote? Unfortunately, it is very likely that if we could query many Ellis County registered voters a good portion would answer "no" to at least one of these questions.
It is my privilege to chair the Communications and Marketing team for Ellis County GOP.
