Back to school: September news

August is usually a quiet month, when people head off on holiday. Alas not at the sailing club!  We have had events most weekends with an excellent turn out. The bank holiday weekend saw us down for five days in a row (six if you are on the General Committee!)! The weather has mostly played ball, even if some wind strengths have stretched my comfort zone!

Our jampacked calendar is continuing into September with a number of social events as well as a key open event: the GSC YWDB open weekend! We are looking forward to welcoming a number of visitors to our club at the gateway to the Thames and I hope you can join us. Please do pop down, whether it is to give a welcoming smile, a hand launching boats or joining in with socials. It would be fantastic to give a brilliant welcome to our visitors and repay the warm welcome they have given us over the last year. Thanks to Geoff Honey who is coordinating the weekend. Get in touch if you can lend a hand.

We are also looking forward to getting Gravesend Sea Cadets out on the water on Saturday 25th September. The day will be focussed on introducing them to sailing, as they haven't managed to get out in a while. We will be using wayfarers, dayboats as well as hiring the RYA tera fleet. Can you help? We need safety, competent helms, on shore support and someone to collect the teras. Please let me know.

The RNLI Fish Supper will follow (also on 25th September) and is set to be a fantastic evening! Coordinated by Penny (p@lhpw.co.uk) with cooking from Liisa and Jason Blowes who will no doubt be supplying a feast. This annual charity social event is fundraising for the RNLI to help save lives at sea. A charity we never want to use, but more than a handful of our members have. Sign up, for what will be a brilliant evening, with Penny.

Please also join me in welcoming Josh Firestone and Thomas Horwood to GSC. Thomas has joined with cruiser "Mellow" and is looking to increase his sailing experience. Josh has been cajoled down by Mark (who only joined last month; good going!) and is new to sailing although picking things up quickly having enjoyed a dinghy dink and a race on Luna this morning. Looking forward to seeing you both down over the next few months.

Looking forward to seeing you at the numerous events in September. Let's make the most of what remains of summer!
