Welcome to this week's issue of The Birthday Workbook!

This week, we read a letter by an ex-Special Operations Force (SOF) commando of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to his younger self. In it, Fred Cheong, now known as Tenzin Drachom, reflects about life in Singapore.

Before you read the article, watch the following video and answer these questions:
  • List three words to describe the personality of Colonel Iain Hoo.
  • Why do you think Colonel Hoo was reluctant to let JK borrow his red beret?
  • What was your greatest learning takeaway from the video?
Now, read the article:

Consider the following questions:
  1. "As you age, you will learn that the threats Singapore face will come in all forms." List three threats that Singapore faces today that has become more apparent to you over time. Why has these threats become more apparent to you as you age?
  2. What threats listed in the article do you think the writer is responding to when he adopted a plant-based diet?
  3. How would you describe the overall tone of the writer's letter?
  4. Why do you think people write letters to their younger self? What merits does this form of writing serve?
  5. The writer compares living life "consciously with passion and meaning" with one that is "merely surviving, unconsciously and dispassionately". What steps would you advise a friend to take to live life more consciously, passionately, and with greater meaning?
