Fall 2021
Mimico Community News & Events

Hope everyone had a safe and healthy summer! Despite the lack of in person meetings or summer drinks, the MRA has been quite active with a lot of Mimico happenings.

There has never been more change happening in Mimico. From transportation plans to large developments, it is important for local voices to be well represented. The past year and a half has proven the need for strong and engaged communities to direct change in their neighbourhoods. We are looking for engaged, committed, and enthusiastic volunteers to join the Board of Directors. Please attend our next virtual meeting on September 15th to learn more or feel free to contact us directly.

MRA Board of Directors Changes

After a very busy year, the MRA will be making some changes to the Board. Michael Majeski has decided to step down from the role of President and will take on an Interim VP role. Adam Matheson has accepted the role of Interim President. These changes are effective immediately and will be revisited in April 2022. The MRA is grateful to both Adam and Michael for all their efforts so far and looks forward to the coming year.

ML Ready Mix

On November 20, a ML Ready Mix truck was involved in a fatal collision with a 59-year old cyclist and former teacher, John Offutt, at the intersection of Royal York Road and Judson Street. The Star has reported on a number of traffic infractions from the cement driver since the accident, with no actions taken by the company. The Mimico Residents Association, along with local residents, have pressured the City to relocate ML Ready Mix since at least 2007, including issuing the latest letter to Councillor Grimes office in July 2021. Councillor Grimes and Toronto City Council had announced in July 2018 that it voted to use $5 million in city funds to buy the ML Ready Mix property and to move the operations to the Port Lands. The purchase was then confirmed in November 2019, and the leaseback of 29 Judson Street was set to expire in 2020. Read Councillor Grimes' office response to the MRA letter here

We will continue to push for the exit of ML Ready Mix from our neighbourhood, as well as for enhanced traffic safety measures in the neighbourhood and by ML Ready Mix.

Dangerous Driving in Mimico

Dangerous driving is an ongoing concern for Mimico residents across the neighbourhood. A Star article using City traffic data noted that Stanley Street was the source of the many speeding tickets in December 2020.  The MRA has been working with the City and Councillor Grimes to identify issues and possible solutions. The City has initiated a traffic study for the South Mimico area along with a number of road improvements along Royal York. A new stop sign will also be installed at Queens and Stanley Ave.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore 2021 Federal Election Debate on the Environment

Friday September 10th 2021, 6PM - 8PM

As a lakeside community, action on the environment should be the key issue for this election. To assist Etobicoke-Lakeshore voters in assessing the options, Etobicoke Climate Action is hosting a debate on the environment as part of the 100 Debates on the Environment nation-wide initiative. The intent of this debate is to allow you to listen to the 2021 Federal Candidates in Etobicoke-Lakeshore present their positions on the environmental issues which are critical to your voting decision this September.
