Barn cats are those who may not be comfortable living in a traditional home setting but would be incredibly helpful and happy as working cats to local homeowners/landowners.

A Barn Cat Program!

We’re talking with a lady who places barn cats! We are in agreement with everything Jenny says about her program, and it’s very exciting to be, in this newsletter, offering you cats for your barn, if you qualify. Here’s the link to the program.
Adopt a Barn Cat!
Relocating community cats, especially feral ones, is a time-consuming process, both for those doing the delivery and for those receiving the cats.

If you take a cat from her known turf and unceremoniously plop her down in another place, she does her best to get back home. That includes evading predators with which she is unfamiliar, and traversing busy streets and highways, endangering her life at every turn.

To get her established in your territory, she needs to be confined safely while she gets used to the sights, sounds, smells, and routines of her new home. This takes at least three weeks.

An ideal acclimation place is in the barn where she can be protected from the weather but can see the area where she will eventually be living. However, if that is unavailable, Jenny has the know-how and equipment to find the best placement and educate the new kitty keepers. Jenny and Thundering Paws will be with you every step of the way.

We don’t relocate cats who aren’t endangered. If you have cats on your property that you want to leave, and you live in an urban area, simply stop feeding them. Everyone thinks they are the only ones feeding a feral or community cat. You aren’t. These kitties have survived this long: they know where to get food.

There are caveats to the above: (1) If you live in a rural area, you may be the cats’ only refuge. Please contact us and we will help. (2) if these cats are not altered, please let us know. (3) If you have kittens, let us know. (4) If an ill or injured cat shows up, let us know. We have the know-how, the care, compassion and, sometimes the donors, to help.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

A member of our board of directors, Tracy Cariker, whose position at her company is Program Manager—Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, has created a tentative DEI statement for Thundering Paws. We will vote on this statement at our board meeting on Sunday, 9/12.

The next step will be the creation of an internship for people who want to become familiar with the work involved in animal—particularly cat—rescue, sanctuary, and managing.

Hurricane Ida’s Animal Victims

People and animals are in urgent need in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Last week, the national cat charity Alley Cat Allies flew in a plane of supplies into the Hattiesburg-Laurel airport to help support these efforts.
Rescuing animals from climate disasters is a strenuous labor of love.

Alley Cat Allies is on the ground in New Orleans. I’m sure other groups are also—or will be soon.

Hurricane Katrina taught us so much about what NOT to do, and quite a bit about the correct procedures for helping animals suffering from such disasters.

I sincerely believe that money is not finite. I am convinced that that the only way to solve the problem of homeless animals is to cooperate, not compete. If you donate to groups helping the animals in the path of the hurricane’s destruction, that does not take away from us.

If you are able, I believe your best bet to help the cats in Ida’s wake is giving to Alley Cat Allies. If you donate, please mention that Thundering Paws asked you to do so.

Thank you for everything you do for animals, and for the people who love them. We are all important on this planet.
